Finish FA1; Vocab week #3

THIS WEEK:

*Learn new keys:  Z, colon (:), Caps lock key, Question mark (?), Tab key,
*Speed Test practice
*Technique grade
*Vocab quiz #3 (list is WINDOWS)
*Formatting Activity 2

Today we will complete FA1 and submit that to me, via email, for a grade.  Before you send anything with your email we need to cover a few things regarding submitting assignments to me using your email.

  1. When you submit an assignment through your email you must include the 5 parts to a proper email (email address, subject line, greeting, body, and signature).  We've already covered this information so this should be a simple reminder.  However, if you do not have a signature in your email account you were probably gone the day we did that and you will need to create a signature (either ask a person sitting next to you or see me outside of class).
  2. When you submit an assignment to me you will need to attach a Microsoft Word file - DO NOT ATTACH A GOOGLE DOC!  Usually what happens when you attach a Google Doc is you have to give me permission to see it, and some people will forget to do that.  More importantly, some of the formatting used in Word gets lost when the document is transferred over to a Google Doc, and then when I go to grade it your document will not "look" correct.  ALWAYS ATTACH A MICROSOFT WORD FILE!!
  3. Save your formatting activities in at least two places.  My suggestion is to save them to your Google drive and to a flash drive.  DO NOT SAVE TO THE DESKTOP!!
  4. I will show you how to upload a file to your Google Drive - if you have a bad memory take notes.  This is important and it is something you need to know how to do, not just for this class but for your future in this school district as there are many teacher who will expect you to have the skill of saving a file to your drive.  You also need to know how to download a file from your drive to your computer, so we'll go over that as well.
After completing this and emailing your FA1 to me we will review by going to the websites.  What I would like for you to do first is go to the Free Typing Games website and try 3 speed tests - we're not going to record these, but let's just practice.  After doing those then you can go to any of the practice websites on the Website resources page on the blog and practice.  Make sure to keep your speed skin on the keyboard!

As a reminder this is vocab week #3, so if you are responsible for defining words for this week those need to be posted by tomorrow night (Tuesday, Sept. 16).  If you missed last week's quiz on Friday you will need to come in outside of class time and complete it.

Wednesday, September 10

Speed test; practice

We are going to spend some time today reviewing the keys we have learned so far.  After reviewing we will go to the Free Typing Games website to see how our speed is progressing.  Just like we did last time we will take 3 one minute timings and use the best score.  Remember to use the corrected speed when writing your speed on the poster.  You will need to use either test #6 or test #7.

After completing the timed writings I will have another activity for you - I'll explain it when we get to it.

Wednesday, September 3

Speed test; learn W and Right Shift Key

We are going to start by reviewing all of the keys, with a concentration on the keys we learned yesterday (the U and the C).

After reviewing we are going to take a speed test to see how fast you are keying.  This will not be for a grade, but it will give us an idea as to where you are now, and then when we do this later how much you have improved.

After the speed test we will head back to learning two new keys - the W (L4) and the Right Shift Key (R4).

Thursday, August 28

Classmarker account; create a Google doc with passwords; review all keys learned

Today we are going to check to make sure your Classmarker account works (this is the online website we will go tomorrow to take the vocab quiz).  I will give you your username and passwords so you can gain access.

Next we will create a new Google document that will hold all of your usernames and passwords - this way you will have 24/7 access to the usernames and passwords and you won't have to memorize them or carry around papers to help you remember what they are.

After we get that accomplished we will review all of the keys we've learned so far.

Friday, August 22

Review keys learned and learn T; 10 Facts about me assignment due tonight!

To start today we will review the O that we learned yesterday.  After reviewing that key we will be learning the T (L1).  Remember, after today you will have already learned 50% of the letters on the keyboard!

Once we get done with the above we are going to take the short time we have left and review.  We are going to use a couple of different websites to break up the monotony and get out of using the book.  Here's the first website:

Lesson 1

Once you get done with Lesson 1 go on to Lessons 2 and 3.

If you complete the above you need to go this next website to practice:

Sense-Lang.org

On that website you can complete any of the lessons from Lessons 1 - 5.  If you complete all of these lessons you need to continue on to the following website:

Free Typing Games

You can work on Lessons 1 - 4, 10, and 15 on this website.

REMINDER: 10 FACTS ABOUT ME ASSIGNMENT DUE TONIGHT!

Start learning the numbers

Today we are going to review the keyboard.  We really haven't practiced much in the last 2 weeks, so this will be a good day for reacquainting ourselves with the keys.

After a review we are going to start learning the numbers.  Today we are going to learn the 8 (R2) and the 1 (L4).

Also, ANYONE CAUGHT CHATTING IN GOOGLE DURING CLASS WILL BE GIVEN A REFERRAL - NO EXCEPTIONS!

Completing FA5

Today you need to finish FA5.  Please note that this formatting activity is to be printed out instead of emailed as many of the other formatting activities have been.

Also, your crossword puzzle is due today at the beginning of the hour - make sure to put your name at the top of your page.

If you are done with both of these assignments you should work to complete any missing assignments you have.

If you are completely caught up with everything we've done then you need to type the lines below in Word with your speed skin on your keyboard.  If you get these done, raise your hand so I can see that you have completed these lines - then you can go to the practice websites:

The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps out to the body that it could squirt blood 30 feet.

The flea can jump up to 350 times its body length. For a human, that would be equivalent to jumping the length of an entire football field.

Vocabulary review; Finish FA10; keyboard review

I want to go over several of the items on the vocabulary list for this week - this will be a good review as we get ready to take Vocab quiz #7 on Friday.

After going through the quick review we will continue to work on FA10 - it is due today.  The instructions are still on yesterday's blogpost.

If you are able to complete FA10 you will have a couple of keyboard reviews to do.  First, using just the keyboard, type the following:

YOU MIGHT BE A REDNECK IF…

You’ve been married three times and still have the same in-laws.

If you think Taco Bell is a Mexican phone company.

Your state has got a new law that says when a couple gets divorced, they are still legally brother and sister.

Your house still has the “WIDE LOAD” sign on the back.

You got stopped by a state trooper; He asked if you had an I.D. and said “Bout what?”

You think a stock tip is advice on worming' your hogs.

Your sister is the third generation of women in your family to conceive a baby as a result of an alien abduction

If you can burp and say your name at the same time

You think possum is “the other white meat.”

You think Sherlock Holmes is a housing project down in Biloxi.

You carried a fishing pole into Sea World.

The centerpiece on your dining room table is an original signed work by a famous taxidermist.

You think a quarter horse is a ride out in front of the Wal-Mart.

If you get done with this, choose one of the keypad handouts and type it in Excel.

Monday, October 28

Learning the keypad; keyboard review

Today we are going to start to learn how to use the keypad (the set of numbers out to the right hand side of the keyboard).  To use the keypad you will only use your right hand (sorry for those of you who are left-handed).    There is a home row for the keypad - I will explain that to you today as well.

After working on the first set of numbers on the keypad we will practice the keyboard.  We will start by going to the PowerTyping website and doing Lessons 5, 6, and 10.

Once you have completed those lessons, you need to go to the Good Typing website and complete the typing speed test there.  You need to get at least 15 words per minute before you can move on to the next step.  Once you get 15 words per minute in your test, raise your hand and let me see it so I know you have completed this part of today's assignment.

Next, go to the Sense Language website and go through each of the Lessons on the website.  There are 16 of these lessons that will help you to practice your keying.

Wednesday, October 23

Netiquette; blank keyboard assignment; symbol practice

Today we are going to begin by going over some information regarding Internet Safety.  The following information is called netiquette, which is a combination of Internet and etiquette - so these are suggested rules of etiquette that one should follow when communicating online.  There are 10 rules and they can be found here:  http://networketiquette.net

Once we have covered that information we will review the keyboard.  Let's go to the Sense-Lang website and click on "BBC News" and choose one of the stories to work with.  We will take a few minutes to review, and then we will complete the assignment.

After completing the assignment we will go back and review from Monday the new symbols we have learned.  The lessons are located at the FreeTypingGames website - the objective is to complete Lessons 24-29 at a proficiency level of 15 words per minute or better.

Friday, August 30

1st Vocab Quiz!; review of all letters learned

Today you are going to be taking your first vocab quiz.  You will get a few minutes at the beginning of the hour to review - use them wisely.  You may use your class' wikispaces page to review, but you may NOT!  use anything while you are taking the quiz.

As I mentioned yesterday, make sure that you answer all the questions and that you submit the quiz when you are done.  Failure to do this may mean that you will have to come in on your own time and retake the quiz - which I'm sure you'd rather not have to do.

After the quiz, you need to open your Google account and create a new Google Doc - we went over how to do this on Wednesday so you should understand how to do this.  If you do not remember, click here and you will find directions on how to open a Google Doc.  Once you have your Google Doc opened rename it "August 30".

After renaming your Google Doc go to page 9 in the book and type drill 4C all lines once.  Your speed skin should be on your keyboard at all times while doing this!

Once you have completed drill 4C you may choose to type any lines from any page that we have already worked on.  In other words, you can choose to type from pages 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9.  Before you begin typing on any page please label what you are typing.  For example, yours might look like this (without the font color and italics):

3F, page 8
he has nine;
she got the jars;
he likes the old song;
he goes to the lake at one;
she has to go get the eight dogs;
he is a hand on the rig in the north;

You will continue keying drills that you choose until the end of the hour.

At the end of the day make sure that you are logged out of your Classmarker and your Google accounts.
