Vocab video; complete FA6; missing work?; Alice

Here is another video for this week's vocabulary:

STARTING TODAY: ANYONE CAUGHT WITH THEIR SPEED SKIN OFF OF THEIR KEYBOARD WILL LOSE 10% ON THE NEXT ASSIGNMENT.  YOU WILL LOSE 10% EVERY TIME I SEE YOU WITH YOUR SPEED SKIN OFF THE KEYBOARD, SO IT IS POSSIBLE TO LOSE MORE THAN 10% IN ONE ASSIGNMENT.

If you have not yet finished FA6 you will have class time to get that done.  If you are done then you need to finish any missing work that you don't have turned in.  I have not yet graded FA5 so if you did not complete it you need to get it turned in ASAP.  If you don't have any missing work then you need to complete the Alice tutorial from Monday - here is the website again:

http://www.cs.duke.edu/csed/alice09/tutorialsAlice3/gettingStartedTutorials/witchCauldron/witchTutorial.pdf

Tomorrow is obviously the last day before Spring Break and our vocab quiz over Technical terms - let's make sure to end the week on a good note and go into Spring Break with a good feeling!

Vocab definitions due; Alice; missing work

A reminder to those who have vocab definitions due for week 8 - those need to be completed on the Wiki spaces page by tonight.

KEEP YOUR SPEED SKIN ON YOUR KEYBOARD AT ALL TIMES!

For those students in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd hours you will need to finish FA5 during class today.  When you are done it should be printed, signed, and then handed in.

If you complete FA5, or you are already done with FA5, you need to then work on the tutorial in Alice - it can be located here:  http://www.cs.duke.edu/csed/alice09/tutorialsAlice3/gettingStartedTutorials/witchCauldron/witchTutorial.pdf

To open Alice, go to your Finder menu (that's the square "smiley face" on the dock).  Click on Applications, then find a folder labeled "Alice3".  Open that folder and inside you will find an icon of Alice - double click on it to open the program.

If you complete the Alice tutorial then you can either work on a missing assignment for Computer Applications, or on the practice websites located on the blog.

Finish FA5; Alice tutorial - Witch; vocab week #8

Today you need to finish FA5 and hand it in - it is due before the end of the hour.  The instructions are still on last Friday's blog post if you need them.

Once you get done with FA5 you need to complete the Alice tutorial at the following website.  You should have already worked in Alice, but it's been quite a while.  Therefore, go to the following website and complete the tutorial - this will help you in re-learning how Alice works.

http://www.cs.duke.edu/csed/alice09/tutorialsAlice3/gettingStartedTutorials/witchCauldron/witchTutorial.pdf

As a reminder, there is a vocab list week, and it is list #8 - Technical.  We have a couple videos to watch on this subject this week - below is the first one.

Wednesday, March 5

Internet Safety - 2 days left! Alice programming introduction

There are 2 days left to work on (in class) your Internet Safety project.  Tomorrow is the last day you will be allowed to work on it and it should be done by the end of the hour.

If you are done you are going to begin working on Alice - an Educational software program that teaches you computer programming in a 3D environment.  To use Alice, go to Finder on your computer.  Next, double click on the Alice folder.  Then, double click on the icon labeled Alice - you will need to agree to any user agreements.

Once you have opened Alice come back here and go to the following video and watch an introduction on how you will interact with the Alice interface.

Alice introductory video

Once you have watched that video you will begin working in Alice with Oracle Academy.  You will work through a series of Lessons that will help you to better understand how Alice works and how to manipulate the Alice programming environment.  Here is where you need to go:

Oracle Academy

Once at that website, click on "Get Started with Alice 3" under the red rectangle on the left side of the page (the red rectangle says "Self Study: Getting started with Java using Alice").  Work through each of the sections of that lesson - if you complete all of the sections move to the next lesson ("Add and Position Objects"); if you complete the different sections of that lesson move on the next lesson, and so on.

We will be using Alice often in the last quarter - you will be getting a head start on learning the software.

Continue work to finish the semester

Today you will continue to complete any work that needs to be done.  I would recommend that you do two things in that regard:

  1. Check your email.  I have graded quite a few assignments and have sent emails regarding the assignment - in other words if you didn't do things correctly I may not have graded your assignment, sent you an email with instructions on what you need to do to get a grade for an assignment, and am waiting for you to resend me an email.
  2. Check to make sure you have all of the vocab quizzes completed.  Some of you have missed time and may not have taken a vocab quiz.  If so, you'll want to get these done, and you can only do that here in class.  Let me know that you are taking one of the quizzes and then you can do it.  Also, if you missed a quiz because you were gone and then you came in at a different time and completed it and I have not entered it into Skyward I need to know so I can change that and your grade can improve.
As we talked about yesterday, you should be working to complete the Alice project.  If you are done with everything and you want to do the podcast I can send you to the computer lab to get that finished.

Monday, December 16

Crossword puzzle; complete work

With only 4 days remaining the key is to make sure that you have everything completed and turned in.  If you have any missing assignments (check the board) you'll want to get those in…getting 50% on an assignment is much better than getting a zero.

If you have all of your assignments in, and you have completed your Alice project, I will allow you time in class to go to the Computer lab and complete your podcast.  See me during class and I will write you a pass to the computer lab.  However, if the computer labs are being used by classes then completing the podcast will not be a possibility and you will have to work on it outside of class (as you were originally supposed to do).  Remember, the podcast is due Wednesday.  If you turn in the podcast on Thursday you'll lose 10% of the grade, but you'll at least get a grade.  Anything turned in after Thursday will be graded at a 50% reduction.

You will have a crossword puzzle the you will get in class today…it will be due Thursday - no exceptions.  I will not accept this after Christmas, so if you don't turn it in by Thursday you will not get any credit for the crossword puzzle.  This puzzle only covers lists 1-9 (NOT list #10).

Friday, December 13

Last vocab quiz; FA9; Dragon Alice project

You'll have a few minutes to review for today's Vocab Quiz #10.  Once you get done with the quiz you may continue to work on FA9 if you still have not completed it.  If you are done with FA9 you can start, or continue (depending on what you've done so far) your work on the Dragon Alice project.

Again, the missing assignments list posted on the wall yesterday is updated with the exception of FA8 and FA9 (if you did not turn those assignments in they are missing but they do not show up on the missing assignments list because they haven't been graded).

Lastly, don't forget that you have your podcast that is due next Wednesday, and that it must be embedded on your blog.  If you need to refresh your memory on how to complete that assignment I would suggest going to the How To page on the blog.  This is a homework assignment and cannot be completed in class.

Thursday, December 12

Flash video; FA9

The above video shows you what is possible to do with Flash.  Flash, like Photoshop, is an Adobe product and is a very useful product for digital imagery.  This is a software program that is often used in advertisements and on the web.

Once we get done watching the video you can continue to work on FA9 - it will be due tomorrow.  If you get done with FA9 you can continue your work on the Alice project, which will be due next week.

Part 2

Part 3

You will need the image below for Part 3.  You'll need to save this and then use it as a billboard - no need to worry, the instructions will tell you how to get this done.

Additionally, don't forget that their is a vocab quiz tomorrow.

Lastly, there are new missing assignment lists posted - you may want to see what you have missing so you know what you need to make up.

Tuesday, December 10

Photoshop video; finish FA8

Here is a short video on Photoshop:

If you have not yet posted a definition to Wiki spaces that needs to be done no later than tonight - please get those done!

After watching the video we will be completing FA8.

If you get done with FA8 you can begin working on the last Alice project - this will be a graded project.  There are 3 parts to this project, but Part 1 is largely a review of everything that we have already accomplished, so it should take you relatively little time to get it completed.

Part 3

You will need the image below for Part 3.  You'll need to save this and then use it as a billboard - no need to worry, the instructions will tell you how to get this done.

Vocab quiz #9; finish Alice project

We will take a few minutes at the beginning of the hour to review for quiz #9 over the multimedia and graphics vocab list.

After the quiz you will have time to complete the Alice project - the Fish Fairy assignment - that we started yesterday (the instructions are still on yesterday's blog post).

If you are done with everything, here are a couple of opportunities to be creative on your own:

Fish Fairy tutorial in Alice; finish FA7

Today you need to finish FA7 and get it submitted to me.  If you are not done it should be completed quickly.

After completing the formatting activity you will need to work on the Alice project below.  This will further your understanding of the Alice program and its capabilites.

I have 2 reminders for you - don't forget that there is a vocab quiz tomorrow, and you need to start thinking about what you are going to do for your podcast, and when you are going to get it done.  I've already had one person turn their podcast in (good job!!).

Lastly, we are exactly 2 weeks away from the end of the semester…if you are missing any assignments you need to start thinking about how you can get those done and submitted for credit.

Vocab quiz #8; finish Alice Space World tutorial

You'll have a few minutes before class starts to review for the vocab quiz.  Do not go to Classmarker until I ask you to do so.

After completing the vocab quiz you'll have the rest of the hour to finish the Space World tutorial in Alice.  The instructions are embedded in yesterday's blogpost.

Embedding video; Alice

Yesterday we learned about a new program called Alice - today we are going to expand our knowledge of Alice and what its capabilities are.  We are going to start working on the first Alice project.  You are going to have today and tomorrow to work on this - however, this is not for a grade.  Your goal is to complete this tutorial - once you do you will have an even better idea of what Alice can do.

Alice Space tutorial

When this message box pops up on your screen in Alice you should do a SAVE AS!  If you click on "Save right now" you will be able to save your file where you want.  Save to your desktop!  Give your file a name that you can remember, then add your first and last name to the end of the filename (for example, Alice1_tomhanks).  If you save it to your desktop, the next time that message pops up you'll be able to click on "Save right now" and replace that file that you have on the desktop.  Then, at the end class you'll be able to easily upload your file to your Google Drive and know what the file is.

Tuesday, April 30

Crossword puzzle; Finish FA7; Keypad practice; Alice

I will be handing you a crossword puzzle today during class - this will be due this Friday, May 3rd.

If you have not yet completed FA7 you need to get it done immediately and emailed to me.  If you have completed that assignment you need to grab a green, keypad handout and type it in Excel.

If you have everything done (including missing assignments) you can work on the Alice project - the dragon world (on the blog from last Wednesday).

Reminder - your podcast is due a week from this Friday (May 10th).  You still have plenty of time to get this done, but time will quickly get away from you.  Make plans to get this assignment completed soon so you aren't scrambling at the last minute!

Friday, April 26

Vocab Quiz - Multimedia/Graphics #1; finish FA7

We'll take a few minutes to review for the vocab quiz.

After completing the vocab quiz you need to finish FA7 (numbered and bulleted lists).

If you finish FA7 you can go back to working on the Alice project (that was split into 4 parts) that is linked to on the blog from earlier this week (Wednesday).

Wednesday, April 24

Finish FA6; Alice project - methods

Today you need to complete FA6.  It should be printed out and handed in.  Make sure to follow all directions!

Once you have completed FA6 you will again be working in Alice.  This project  has 4 parts and they are below:

Part 1 - Scene setup and animation

Part 2 - Writing Methods and Events

Part 3 - Camera Control, Invisibility, and 3-D Text

Part 4 - Sounds, Billboards, 3-D Text, AsSeenBy

You will not get all of these parts done today.  However, Parts 1 and 2 should be mostly a review of what you've already accomplished.  It will be during Part 3 that you will really begin to learn new Alice concepts and incorporating those into your Princess & Dragon world.

Wednesday, April 17

GB/Bytes; Alice - finish Fish Fairy world

We will start today discussing computer memory - the most important of which will be bytes and GB.

Additionally, you will be working to complete the Fish Fairy world in Alice.

Tuesday, April 16

Finish FA4; Cache video; Alice Fish Fairy project

Tomorrow, at 8 am, grades need to be completed for progress reports.  If you have a missing assignment you need to get it turned in as soon as possible so I can have an opportunity to get it submitted to Skyward (check the wall for updated missing assignments - just posted today).

Today you will need to finish your formatting activity and email that to me.  Once you get that completed there are two things you can do.  First, if you have vocab definitions to post on the Wiki page you can get that done now.  Secondly, if you have everything done you can start working on the next Alice project, embedded below.  When you are saving make sure to save to your account, and you should name this project "Fish Fairy".

Vocab quiz; Alice

You will be given time at the beginning of class to review for today's vocab quiz.

After completing the vocab quiz you will again be working in Alice.  First, I need to clarify what I was talking about yesterday concerning saving.  When the message box pops up after 15 minutes of NOT saving your project, you need to click on "Remind Me Later".  This is different than what I stated yesterday.  Once you have closed the pop-up window go to File and choose "Save World As".  Remember to save into your account (and remember the folder you save it into)!!!

Space World project finish

Saving in Alice:

When this message box pops up on your screen you should do a SAVE AS!  If you click on "Save right now" you will be able to save your file where you want by doing the Save As.  Remember...do NOT save to your desktop!  Instead save your files into your documents folder of your account.  Also it is very important to make sure to give your files descriptive names - otherwise you will easily get confused about which file belongs to which project.

You need to complete the Space World instructions that were embedded on the blog from Tuesday.  Once you complete those instructions, you need to modify your world the following manner:

You are going to have your Humvee drive to a different place in the world, pick up an Astronaut from the Lunar lander, and then go back to the "base camp".

  1. Add an object to the current world in order to create a "base camp" for the original Astronaut.  This can most easily be done by adding a building of some sort (you can choose what type of building since there are no "space" buildings to choose from) near the Humvee.
  2. Your Humvee will drive to the Lunar Lander in a different area of your world.  You will need to create a method in which the Humvee moves to the Lunar Lander as part of your program.
  3. Once the Humvee arrives at the Lunar Lander, the second Astronaut will "de-board" the Lunar Lander and enter the Humvee (just like the original Astronaut did to the Humvee when you set him to the Humvee).
  4. After the second astronaut enters the Humvee, have the Humvee drive back to the "base camp".
  5. Both Astronauts should exit the Humvee, stand next to each other, say something, and then wave at the camera.
When you get this done let me see your finished product!
