Today we are going to start with learning the keyboard and how to key correctly. You should know that you will be learning the touch typing method - that means that you will be learning to key without looking at the keyboard. That is why we use the speed skins - they are to be on your keyboard at all times throughout the entire semester.
The biggest factor in learning to key successfully is to first concentrate on technique (we will cover what you need to do correctly in terms of technique today in class). Most people want to type fast right away - I think that's human nature, but it just doesn't work that way. Being able to type efficiently and at a fast pace takes a bunch of practice.
Our concentration as we begin to learn the keyboard will be on technique - speed will come later. It is important that you concentrate on doing things right first, and usually that means at a slow pace as you begin, rather than worry about your speed.

Finish Xtranormal movie; create your blog; practice
REMINDER - Friday is the vocab quiz over word list #2.
You will have the entire hour today to complete your movie in Xtranormal. As I have mentioned several times...use the rubric on the Internet Safety page to guide you in completing the movie in a fashion that will help you earn the maximum points for this assignment. Once you are done with your movie, and you are absolutely sure that you are done editing, you may publish your movie. *Caution* - once you publish your movie you can no longer make any changes to it!! You need to have your movie done and published before tomorrow's class period - we will be going over how to embed your movie on your blog.
Which leads me to the next item - you need to create your own blog. Below is a video that will guide you in creating a blog on Blogger (which is where the class blog is "housed"). It really is not a difficult process, but it is something that everyone will need to do. If you have a Google account (which all of you do), creating your own blog is pretty simple.
In addition, here are 2 links that may also help you get your blog up and running:
Blogger instructions
About.com instructions to create a blog
Once you have finished creating your blog (some of you completed this yesterday so you are starting at this point), you have practice to do in Word. Here's what you need to do:
P. 6, 2E, all lines
P. 7, 3C, lines 3-8
P. 8, 3E, lines 7-10
If you get this done print it out and show me. Then you can go to the following website to practice:
Free Typing Games. While there you should ONLY! be working on Lessons of keys that we have learned so far.

Keyboarding beginning
- Begin learning the keyboard.
- We will begin discussing proper technique from the book; what you will be graded on is embedded below. This is called a Technique sheet - you will become very familiar with these.
- Home Row consists of the following keys: A S D F J K L ;
- Proper practice is essential to improvement. Think long-term...don't worry about typing fast today...learn how to do the skills correct today so you can build the proper foundation for keying fast later. I GUARANTEE THAT IF YOU FOLLOW MY INSTRUCTION, YOU WILL BE BETTER AT KEYING WHEN YOU LEAVE THIS CLASS THAN YOU ARE TODAY!!
- THE MORE WILLING YOU ARE ABLE TO LEARN AND DO THE SKILLS CORRECT TODAY, EVEN THOUGH IT WILL BE DIFFICULT TO BEGIN WITH, THE EASIER IT WILL BE TO KEY TOMORROW.

Vocab help; Keypad work; FA8
1. Today we are going to start off with discussing some of the items that are on the vocab list for this week to help you with tomorrow's quiz. To start with, let's see if you know what type of websites you would find with these top level domain names:
2. After watching the video on cookies, you need to finish FA8 - the directions are on yesterday's blogpost.
3. Once you finish FA8, grab the green handout that is sitting on the cart. In this handout you will be using the Keypad again, but you will be adding the 2, 5, and 8 numbers to the others that you learned yesterday. Type the handout in the same fashion as you did yesterday - each Drill should be typed in a column. For example, Drill 1 should be entered in Column A; Drill 2 should be entered in Column B, and so on.
4. If you finish, you can go to 10 Fast Fingers - when you complete your speed test post it on your blog if it is faster than your previous best.
.gov?
.net?
.com?
.mil?
.edu?
.org?
.uk?
There are two ISP's in Geneseo - who are they? (first, figure out what an ISP is)
Did you know you can easily find your IP Address (first of all, what is an IP Address)?
Go to www.whatismyipaddress.com and it will tell you what the IP Address is for your internet connection.
What's the difference between a virus and a bug (bug was a vocab word from the software list)?
[Video] Computer Basics : How Do Websites Recognize Computer Cookies?

Keypad; FA8
Today we are going to start learning the keypad - that's the section of the keyboard on the right hand side that has the set of numbers on it. It's fairly simple to learn.
First, you must use your right hand (sorry if you are left-handed, but that's the way it works). Second, there is a "home row" on the keypad just as there is on the alphanumeric part of the keyboard. The home row on the keypad is as follows:
Thumb - zero
R1 - 4
R2 - 5
R3 - 6
R4 - Enter key
You will use these fingers in "columnar" fashion; in other words, your index finger will key the numbers in the left column (1, 4, 7), your middle finger will key the numbers in the middle column (2, 5, 8), and your ring finger will key the numbers in the right column (3, 6, 9).
To begin learning the keypad today we are going to type a handout using Microsoft Excel. If you don't remember, Microsoft Excel is represented by a green X on your dock, and looks like this:
After completing the keypad work, we are going to start working on Formatting Activity 8. In this activity you are going to learn to use the word count feature in Microsoft word. The word count feature shows you several pieces of important information: pages, words in the document (but you can also find this at the bottom of your document), characters in the document (with and without spaces), lines, and paragraphs. In order to access the word count feature in Microsoft Word, go to TOOLS menu, then select WORD COUNT.

Welcome Back!
I hope you all enjoyed your spring break! I know I found it to be relaxing, and something I desperately needed in order to prepare for this last stretch run to the end of school (there are only 7 weeks left!).
Today, we need to get back in the flow of keying on a daily basis. We will start with reviewing everything on the keyboard that we have learned so far...and we will do it with the speed skin on the keyboard :-) I have a handout that you need to key in word to begin with.
There will be a vocab quiz this Friday, and it is over the 7th list of words (Internet #3). If you STILL!! have not defined your words for the vocab quiz for this Friday you need to get this done before school tomorrow! If you have a vocab "word" that is an acronym (for example GPS) make sure to include what each letter stands for as part of the definition; however that should not be the only thing you enter - you need to include the definition also. Here is what is left in each hour:
3rd hour - 3 definitions left
4th hour - 2 definitions left
6th hour - 4 definitions left
7th hour - 4 definitions left (but 2 definitions have no name next to them)
8th hour - 5 definitions left
After finishing the handout, if you have missing assignments you need to get those done now. If you do get done with the handout I would like for you to go to 10 Fast Fingers and test yourself to see how you do on speed typing. When you get done you will paste your best time on your home page of your blog. Here is how that can be done:

After completing the timed test on the website, scroll down and you will see something similar to this:
Select all of the writing in the "HTML-Code" section and then copy it. Next, go to the home page on your blog, create a new post (NOT A NEW PAGE!!) titled Speed test. Next, open up the HTML editing window (you do that by clicking on "HTML" in the top left corner when you create a new post), then paste what you copied into the message box. Click on "Compose" in the top left (next to "HTML"), then publish your new post.

Logo Exercise 2 and Practice #1
As a reminder, there will be a vocab quiz this week. We are on Week #5 - the list is "Internet #1". Your definitions should be posted by Tuesday night. I am sharing a video about Netiquette (a term most of you probably are not familiar with). This should help you understand what that means.
Today you need to finish your Exercise #2 sheet that we started on Friday (this is the sheet that you needed to write out the Logo directions for #'s 3, 5, 6, 8, and 10). You will have the rest of the our to complete these - I will show you the correct answers tomorrow.
If you are done with the Exercise #2 sheet, grab a Practice #1 sheet and create the Logo instructions to draw the 6 shapes that are listed on that sheet. Mark the starting point with a dot and start and stop in the zero heading at the same point (where the dot is). You can complete all of these shapes using only the FD, BK, RT, and LT commands.
Once you have completed this you need to open Microsoft Word, turn to page 29 in your book, and type lines 1-7 once on 13B. In addition, turn to page 30, and type 13C, lines 1-6 once. Lastly, type lines 1-8 once on 13D.

3-day weekend
Welcome to the weekend (well, almost anyway)!
Today we are going to finish (for those that did not get their blog created) creating blogs in class. Mostly this applies to 6th, 7th, and 8th hours as you were not able to get your blog completed.
For 3rd and 4th hours you will be creating a new page on your blog titled "Journal". This will be used weekly to post a reflection of what you have accomplished during the week. A reflection should explain what you've learned in this class for the past week. It might include successes, failures (things that you found difficult to do), what you liked, what you didn't like, how you are going to use what you've learned, and/or why you think it is important or not important. You can include images (we haven't learned how to do this yet, but will eventually) to help describe your reflection.
In addition we will also be reviewing the keyboard and all of the keys that we have learned so far.
We also have shortened hours due to the Teacher's Institute for the last hour of school - and don't forget you also have Connections today.

Welcome Back!
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!
It may seem hard to believe, but we only have 18 days of school left before we leave for Christmas break (that's assuming we don't have any snow days). It will go by fast! My hope for each one of you is that you end the semester on a good note - work hard to improve your grade in the last 3 and a half weeks!
We are jumping right back into our routine - this week we have vocab list #9 (Multimedia/Graphics) - the quiz over these words will be this Friday (Dec. 2nd). Remember, you created your account on Wikispaces and should have your username and password saved in Google Docs. If not, I can find out what your username is, but I don't have any clue on what your password is. Here is this week's list of students who are responsible for defining the 11 vocab words on Wikispaces:
3rd hour: KatieB, AustinG, TristanJ, AlexaM, ElizabethP
4th hour: BenettE, AllyssaF, LillyH, AndrewL, TateN, PiageO
6th hour: DaltonC, SethC, BenC, DevonM, MarshallR, ReneeT
7th hour: ScottF, FrejaH, AJM, AutumnS, AlexW
8th hour: SydneyH, LukeJ, DavyenM, KeeganM, ReneeR
For today, if you did not complete FA8 (check back to Thursday's blogpost for the directions on completing this assignment), you need to get it done first. It should be emailed to me. Once you have completed this, check the board to see if you have any missing assignments. If so, get them done in the remaining time.
If you are all caught up on your work, then I have several things I want you to work on. I will give you a handout that you can type. You'll need to type the entire handout in Word - this will give you some review practice in keying. Then, I want you to grab the green, keypad practice sheet and key it in Excel (there is no need to save either one of these - you are doing this for practice).
Once you complete these I will allow you to work in Alice. What I would like for you to do in Alice is try to include the "Do in order" or "Do together" or one of the other methods that are located at the bottom of the Editor area. These allow you to make some very interesting actions for your characters.
