Vocab week #10 (Java video); Practice and timed writing

This is the last week of vocab (try to contain your excitement), so for anyone who is responsible for this week's vocab definitions they need to be completed by tomorrow night. We'll begin today with the following video on Java:

After watching the video we are going to go to one of the practice websites and practice.  Then, we'll take another speed test today to see how you are doing speed-wise.  At this point many of you will notice that you are reaching the apex of your ability - in other words you'll probably recognize that it is getting more difficult to improve your speed.  That's normal.  In fact, at this point, any improvement will likely be small (in other words if your speed does improve it may only be by one or two words per minute).  Complete 3 of the timed writings and write your best one on the sheet on the wall.

Alice - space project; practice timed writings

Today we are going to cover the different domain names possible on the Internet.  Several are included with this week's vocabulary quiz (the ones included on the vocabulary quiz are the 4 most commonly used domains on the Internet), but there are many others that you may not see very often.

After discussing the Internet domain names you will have time to work on your Alice project.

If you complete the Alice project I want you to go to the Free Typing Games website and practice your timed writings.  However, this time I want you to work on your 3-minute timed writings instead of the 1-minute timed writings we completed for a grade last time.  You can use any of the Classic Tales, 26-35, to practice your speed tests.  You are not working on just completing one speed test - you are practicing your timed writings until the end of the hour.

Vocab quiz #6; finish FA2; Timed writing

From now until the end of the year your speed skin will be on the keyboard.  You know all of the letters and numbers (as well as most of the symbols - but those are rarely used) so there is no need to look at your keyboard to find a letter or number.

We will take vocab quiz #6 after reviewing for several minutes.

I know many of you did not get FA2 done yesterday.  But, there were also many of you who spent too much time randomly looking up movies and actors on imdb.com, so you wasted a lot of the time that should have been used for completing your work.  You will need to be more diligent in getting your formatting activities done in the allotted time from now on.

If you did not get your FA2 done yesterday, after the quiz you need to get that done.  Same with the timed writing - if you didn't hand it in yesterday get that done today and handed in so it can be graded.  Here is the link to the timed writings page:  freetypinggame.net

When you are doing your timed writing you need to click on the "Certificate Typing Test" on the Test page - otherwise you will not be able to print out the typing certificate that will have the information that I can use to get your timed writing graded.

If you have not yet submitted to me your Internet Safety video (through email) from your blog you will need to get that done today as well.

If you are done with all of the above, you may go to either the Free typing games website or the Free online games website

Spam vs. Phishing; Complete FA2

After the videos you will be completing FA2.  When you are done with FA2 you should have 2 printed pages, and in the instructions it tells you which page should be on top.

When you finish you need to go to the Certificate test webpage and complete a timed writing.  This will be handed in for a grade, so you will want to try and do as well as you can.  That means that you can try 20 times if you want, but you need to have 1 completed and handed in today.  I will show you how this is going to be done.  The grading scale for the timed writing is as follows:

Timed writing Q1

If you complete the timed writing you may practice on the Freetypinggame.net website for the rest of the hour (this is the website with the certificate test).

Crossword puzzle handout; learning new symbol keys

DO YOU HAVE ANY MISSING ASSIGNMENTS?  IF SO, THOSE NEED TO BE COMPLETED BY THIS FRIDAY!  FRIDAY IS THE LAST DAY OF THE 1ST QUARTER AND I WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY ASSIGNMENTS AFTER FRIDAY.  AS USUAL, IF YOU NEED TO COME IN BEFORE SCHOOL, DURING REAL OR LUNCH RECESS, OR IF YOU WANT TO STAY AFTER SCHOOL PLEASE PLAN ACCORDINGLY!

Today I will be passing out a new Crossword Puzzle (there is no vocab quiz this week...however if you are the leader for next week you should pass out your vocab words to the people in your group either today or tomorrow!).  This crossword puzzle covers vocab words from lists 1-4 (in other words, up to last week).  This will be due Friday!  Be smart and don't wait until the last minute to do it...remember Thursday we will be gone all day in Chicago and you may find it difficult to remember to do it Thursday night.

Today we are going to add 3 symbols to what we have already learned on the keyboard.  They are as follows:

' (apostrophe) = R4
- (hyphen) = R4
" (quotation marks) = Left Shift + R4

Turn to page 18 in your book and open Microsoft Word.  We will begin learning these keys today by typing each line in 8D, p. 18 twice.

After learning these keys we will practice our timed writings.  A timed writing is also sometimes called a speed test.  So, we are going to go to the Free Typing Game website and practice our 1-minute timed writings.  I will explain these a little more once we get to this part of the class.
