Vocab week #10 (Java video); Practice and timed writing

This is the last week of vocab (try to contain your excitement), so for anyone who is responsible for this week's vocab definitions they need to be completed by tomorrow night. We'll begin today with the following video on Java:

After watching the video we are going to go to one of the practice websites and practice.  Then, we'll take another speed test today to see how you are doing speed-wise.  At this point many of you will notice that you are reaching the apex of your ability - in other words you'll probably recognize that it is getting more difficult to improve your speed.  That's normal.  In fact, at this point, any improvement will likely be small (in other words if your speed does improve it may only be by one or two words per minute).  Complete 3 of the timed writings and write your best one on the sheet on the wall.

Vocab Quiz #8; finish missing work; Word It puzzles

You'll be given a few minutes to review before we take the vocab quiz...use it wisely!

Once you complete the vocab quiz you have several options:

  1. complete FA11 and send it to me via email
  2. complete any missing work - if you need to go to Skyward to check to see what's missing that's fine, but do so quickly; I will be reading off everyone who has submitted old assignments (FA 9, 10 and 11) so you know if those have been received
  3. if you don't have any missing work I have some Word It puzzles that you can do for fun; you may work on these with a partner if you wish, but there will only be groups of 2; I'll give you the answers after you've had time to work on them for a while
  4. if you'd rather go to the practice websites that is perfectly ok...but you must have your speed skin on your keyboard!

FA5 completion

This is a vocab week, so if you have definitions to post on the Wiki spaces page you will need to get that done by tomorrow night.  Remember that tomorrow is a half day of school, so getting that done tonight may be to your advantage.

Some people were unable to complete FA5 on Friday, so if you are one of those people you will have time today in class to get that done.  As a reminder make sure that you have your speed skin on your keyboard while you are working.  This formatting activity should be printed and signed before you hand it in.

Once you have completed FA5 you need to complete the green handout that has the drills we type in Excel.  You need to complete all 6 drills in Excel just as we have done in the past.  Once you have completed all of the drills then you can go to the Free Typing Games website and complete at least 3 of the speed tests - today you should use the #26 or #27 classic tales as your speed test.  When you complete the speed test write your score on the poster sheet on the wall next to your name (Sharpies are on my desk).

When you get done with the speed tests there is a handout on my desk that you need to type in Microsoft Word.  This is for practice but you should try to get as much done as you can.

Windows vocabulary; vocab word search; keying practice

DO NOT CHANGE THE BACKGROUNDS ON THE COMPUTER!!  This actually is a violation of the computer lab policy and should not be attempted.

I want to start today by discussing a few things regarding this week's vocabulary list - Operating System, Windows, Tool bar, and Menu bar.

After explaining those to you I am going to give you time in class today to search for definitions for your vocabulary words.  After today there shouldn't be anyone who doesn't have a definition posted when it is time for their words to be posted on the Wikispaces page.  You're not going to be able to post your definitions in class today but you will have your definitions.

Once this is complete we will head back to the practice websites for more practice.

Friday, August 29

First vocab quiz; keying review

We will take a few minutes at the beginning of the hour to review the vocab words for this week.  You will want to go to the Wikispaces page for your class to do that (remember that to get to your Wikispaces page you need to go to the vocabulary page on the blog and click on the class hour link). DO NOT GO TO CLASSMARKER UNTIL YOU ARE TOLD TO DO SO!

Once you are done with the quiz you need to open Microsoft Word and type lines 1-10 on 4C at the bottom of page 9 in the book.

When you complete those 10 lines you may go to the following websites and practice:

Typing Lessons (you can work on lessons 1, 2 or 3)

Sense-Lang (work on lessons 1-5)

Free Typing Games (you can type lessons 1-4, 6, 10, and 15)

HAVE A GREAT 3-DAY WEEKEND!

Embedding Internet Safety to Blog; practice

Today we are going to try and embed your video(s) in your blog.  The first thing that you will need to do is make sure your video is loaded into your class/hour group on GoAnimate!  Once that has been taken care of I can then copy and send you (through email) the embed code that you will need to post to your blog (some of you might notice that you have already been sent the email).

Additionally, when you receive the email that contains the embed code from me you will need to forward that to your partner since they will also need to embed your video(s) on their blog.

To complete the Internet Safety project you will need to embed your video(s) on your blog.  If you have only one video you will embed it in one blog post - if you have more than one video you will have to embed each video in a different blogpost.  Once you have embedded all of your videos you will need to send me an email that contains the names of you and your partner(s), as well as a link to your blog and your partner's blog.  Here is what I would do if I were Jimmy Fallon:

Mr. Pardoe:

Here are the links to our group's blogs for the Internet Safety project:

Jimmy Fallon - tonightshow.blogspot.com
Tina Fey - funnylady.blogspot.com

Thanks!

Jimmy Fallon
Tonight Show host

After completing this, what I want you to do is choose a practice website to go to and practice.  Use your speed skin while you are practicing.

Friday, November 8

Vocab Quiz #7; SLC covers

We will be taking vocab quiz #7 at the beginning of the hour, just like normal.  You will have several minutes for review.

After the quiz you need to complete your SLC folder covers.  Remember, you need to have at least these 2 items - your name (in WordArt), and an image of your rainforest animal.  Once you have those 2 items you may add any other images or information to your cover.  These must be done today, so you will need to print the cover out before you leave class.

Once you complete the cover you should work on any assignment that you have missing.

If you are all done you may go to the practice website and practice your keying - with your speed skin on the keyboard.

RSS video; more keypad; FA4

As a reminder to all of you who are responsible for vocab words for this week, you need to have your words posted on the wiki spaces page by tomorrow night.    Here is a video to help you better understand what RSS is:

After watching the video we will again be working with the keypad for part of class.  Today we will add the 7, 8, and 9 to the other numbers we learned yesterday (the 4, 5, and 6).  I will have another handout for you to work with.

After completing the handout you will be working with a partner on a small in-class "project".  This won't be for a grade, but will be for keying practice.  We will be using the FreeTypingGame website first, then after that we will go to the TypeRacer website.

Monday, October 28

Learning the keypad; keyboard review

Today we are going to start to learn how to use the keypad (the set of numbers out to the right hand side of the keyboard).  To use the keypad you will only use your right hand (sorry for those of you who are left-handed).    There is a home row for the keypad - I will explain that to you today as well.

After working on the first set of numbers on the keypad we will practice the keyboard.  We will start by going to the PowerTyping website and doing Lessons 5, 6, and 10.

Once you have completed those lessons, you need to go to the Good Typing website and complete the typing speed test there.  You need to get at least 15 words per minute before you can move on to the next step.  Once you get 15 words per minute in your test, raise your hand and let me see it so I know you have completed this part of today's assignment.

Next, go to the Sense Language website and go through each of the Lessons on the website.  There are 16 of these lessons that will help you to practice your keying.

Monday, May 6

Reminders; Flash animation video; keying practice

To start with, I need to remind you of a couple of things.  First, your podcast is due this Friday!!!  I currently have 13 podcasts (total) from the 5 different classes - that means there are about 110 of you that haven't done your podcast yet.  If you are one of those that hasn't completed their podcast you really need to get it done very quickly!

Next, if you have vocab definitions for this week's vocab list those need to be entered on the wiki page by tomorrow night.  Also, since this is the last week of vocab quizzes we are going to have a little competition.  The class that has the highest average on this week's vocab quiz will earn a treat next week!

Missing assignments - all assignments will need to be turned in by Monday, May 20th.  That is 2 weeks from today.  I will not accept any assignments after that date.

Flash Animation:

After watching this video we are going to have a little fun practicing our keying.  Everyone needs to go to the following website...and then we can begin!

Keying practice

Tuesday, April 30

Crossword puzzle; Finish FA7; Keypad practice; Alice

I will be handing you a crossword puzzle today during class - this will be due this Friday, May 3rd.

If you have not yet completed FA7 you need to get it done immediately and emailed to me.  If you have completed that assignment you need to grab a green, keypad handout and type it in Excel.

If you have everything done (including missing assignments) you can work on the Alice project - the dragon world (on the blog from last Wednesday).

Reminder - your podcast is due a week from this Friday (May 10th).  You still have plenty of time to get this done, but time will quickly get away from you.  Make plans to get this assignment completed soon so you aren't scrambling at the last minute!

Thursday, March 21

Review keypad; keyboarding baseball

We will review all of the keys that we have learned thus far on the keypad.

After reviewing, it will be keyboarding baseball!

**REMEMBER...CROSSWORD PUZZLE IS DUE TOMORROW!**

Friday, March 15

Vocab quiz #6; finish FA2; Timed writing

From now until the end of the year your speed skin will be on the keyboard.  You know all of the letters and numbers (as well as most of the symbols - but those are rarely used) so there is no need to look at your keyboard to find a letter or number.

We will take vocab quiz #6 after reviewing for several minutes.

I know many of you did not get FA2 done yesterday.  But, there were also many of you who spent too much time randomly looking up movies and actors on imdb.com, so you wasted a lot of the time that should have been used for completing your work.  You will need to be more diligent in getting your formatting activities done in the allotted time from now on.

If you did not get your FA2 done yesterday, after the quiz you need to get that done.  Same with the timed writing - if you didn't hand it in yesterday get that done today and handed in so it can be graded.  Here is the link to the timed writings page:  freetypinggame.net

When you are doing your timed writing you need to click on the "Certificate Typing Test" on the Test page - otherwise you will not be able to print out the typing certificate that will have the information that I can use to get your timed writing graded.

If you have not yet submitted to me your Internet Safety video (through email) from your blog you will need to get that done today as well.

If you are done with all of the above, you may go to either the Free typing games website or the Free online games website

Friday, March 1

Vocab Quiz 4; Internet Safety Project Due!

As usual with the vocab quizzes you will get a few minutes to review - you should be reviewing by going to the wikispaces page.  After reviewing for several minutes you will go to Classmarker to take the quiz - DO NOT GO TO CLASSMARKER UNTIL YOU ARE TOLD TO!

After completing the vocab quiz, you and your partner will need to finish your Xtranormal movie and get it published.  This will take some time, so don't try to publish with 2 minutes left in class.  Once you publish you will have work to do on the computer.

After you have finished the vocab quiz and publishing your movie you will be keying.  Here is what I want you to do WITH YOUR SPEED SKIN ON YOUR KEYBOARD:

(in Microsoft Word)
P. 29, 13B, lines 1-4 once
P. 30, 13D, lines 1-6 once
P. 31, 14B, lines 1-4 once
P. 32, 14D, lines 1-6 once

If you get done with those lines you need to raise your hand so I can see that you are done.  Then you need to go to this website and practice off of this website:  Free online typing games

End of Week #2

We have covered a lot of territory in the couple of weeks we have been in class.  Today we are going to use as a practice day - there will be no learning of new keys.

To start, what I want you to do is pick 2 lines from each of pages 5-9 (excluding sections 2E and 3F) and type them in Word.

Once you have completed these 10 lines, then you need to go to the Sense Language website listed on the Website Resources page on the blog.  Once you get to the website you will need to click on "Keyboarding Tutorials".  Next, click on "Lessons".  Please do each of the first 5 lessons listed here.

If you get done with these and there is still time left in class, you can choose any of the practice websites listed on the Website Resources page.  BUT!!, you must keep your speed skin on the keyboard and you must be on one of the Website Resource practice sites.

If you would rather practice by typing something out of the book, then you are welcome to go back to Word and type lines from the book.

Shift and period; bookmarking

In my class you are allowed 4 exits for the semester.  These can be used whenever needed, but you are only going to get 4 of these to use.  If you do not use these, at the end of the semester the ones you have not used will be counted as extra credit.  When you want to use one, this is the process you should go through:

  1. Grab a sheet from the countertop
  2. Come ask me to go to the restroom/locker
  3. Take the sheet with you (it will act as your hall pass)
  4. Bring the sheet back and put in the gray tray
Believe it or not we have already learned 15 of the 26 letter keys (over half).  We are making good progress - let's keep it up!!

The two new keys for today will be not be letter keys.  The Left Shift Key (L4) and the period (R4) will be learned today.

Friday, January 11

Review

With shortened hours today we are only going to review what we have learned so far.  Again, today's focus is on using the correct fingers on the correct keys.  However, you also need to continue to work on using the other proper techniques that we have discussed in class.  All of those techniques are listed on the following technique sheet, which is what I will use to grade you when it comes time to be graded on technique.  This can also be found on the Website Resources page of the blog.

Missing work!! Practice

It is important that you take a look at the missing assignments list in the room - we have a large amount of people who have missing assignments!  Many of those people with missing assignments will change their grade if they turn in what is missing.  I will accept any late assignments up until school starts tomorrow!  If you are missing the work in Edmodo and decide to complete parts or all of that assignment, please send me an email to let me know that you entered your responses in Edmodo.

If you have nothing missing you need type the following in Word:
page 19, 9B, lines 1-10 once
page 20, 9C, lines 1-9 once
page 20, 9D, lines 1-7 once

When you get done typing the above lines, let me know so I can come look at them.  After you get done I will have something for you to do.
