Embedding Internet Safety to Blog; practice

Today we are going to try and embed your video(s) in your blog.  The first thing that you will need to do is make sure your video is loaded into your class/hour group on GoAnimate!  Once that has been taken care of I can then copy and send you (through email) the embed code that you will need to post to your blog (some of you might notice that you have already been sent the email).

Additionally, when you receive the email that contains the embed code from me you will need to forward that to your partner since they will also need to embed your video(s) on their blog.

To complete the Internet Safety project you will need to embed your video(s) on your blog.  If you have only one video you will embed it in one blog post - if you have more than one video you will have to embed each video in a different blogpost.  Once you have embedded all of your videos you will need to send me an email that contains the names of you and your partner(s), as well as a link to your blog and your partner's blog.  Here is what I would do if I were Jimmy Fallon:

Mr. Pardoe:

Here are the links to our group's blogs for the Internet Safety project:

Thanks!

After completing this, what I want you to do is choose a practice website to go to and practice.  Use your speed skin while you are practicing.

Reminders; Formatting Activity 8

**REMINDERS**

  • The crossword puzzle you received from me yesterday is due Friday.  This is homework.  You may turn it in at any point between now and Friday.
  • Vocabulary words have been posted on the Wiki page for you to define.  While definitions are not due until next Tuesday for next week's (last) vocabulary quiz, you may want to go to the Wiki page this week to get your definition(s) posted so you can get that done and out of the way.
  • Your podcast is due a week from this Friday.  A large majority of you have not yet completed the podcast and will need to plan when you are going to get it done.  I would recommend that you print out what you are going to read for your speech - I think it will make the process of completing the podcast easier (although you certainly don't have to...just my opinion).
Today we are going to start on FA8.  Before you actually start we are going to cover a couple of formatting items that you need to know how to do.  First, I'll show you how to use the word count feature in Word.  This is easy to do, and will prove useful later - I can't tell you how many times I was told to write a paper that contained a certain number of words ("Your paper must be at least 500 words long", for example).  If you don't use the Word count feature you'll be counting the words manually - a real pain in the neck!

Additionally we are going to learn how to insert an image onto your blog.  This process takes several steps, but once you learn it I think you'll find that it is relatively easy to do.  Being able to insert images is an important part of being a good blogger.

First, you want to go to Google Images to find an image that are going to include on your blog post.  Because you are doing a search, make sure to type in school appropriate search terms.  Once you have found the image you need, hold down the control key and click on the image - once you do that you will see a drop-down menu like the one shown here:

Click on "Save Image As...", then save your image into your Computer Applications folder.  Once you have saved the image into your folder you are now ready to embed your image on your blog.  To do that, open your blog and start a new blog post.  Click on the "Insert Image" icon (shown below) and then navigate to the folder on your computer where you saved your image.  Once you find your image open it, and then your image can be used on your blog.

Vocab Quiz #5; embed internet safety movie on blog

You will be able to spend the first couple of minutes reviewing for the vocab quiz - you will want to go to your wikispaces page to review.  Do NOT go to Classmarker until you are told to go there.

Once you have completed your vocab quiz you will want to embed your Internet Safety video on your blog.  I am going to include those instructions below.

  1. Log into your Xtranormal account
  2. Click on the "My Stuff" tab
  3. Click on your movie
  4. The click on where it says "<  >   Embed the Xtranormal player" (see image below)

  1. In the window that pops up, you want to choose a size of 480X270.
  2. You cannot change the title, and you do not need to include anything in the description bar.
  3. Click in the "Copy this code" box; it should select all of the text written there - copy it
  4. Open your blog and create a new post.  At the top of the screen you will see where it says "Post title" - click on this.  The post should be titled Internet Safety movie.
  5. Next, click on HTML (see image below).  Then paste your copied code from the Xtranormal website.

  1. Once you have copied your HTML code, then you can click on the Publish button at the top of the page.
  2. Go to your blog - you should see your movie on your blog!  If you see the HTML code you copied from the Xtranormal website then you did not click on the HTML button when you were creating your blogpost.  You'll need to go back to step 8 and start over.

Missing assignments; vocab; Creating your blog

I have now posted a new set of missing assignment lists.  I am also handing out a slip of paper to all of those who have missing assignments.  Remember, this Friday is the last day of the 3rd Quarter and any missing assignments after Friday will stay as a 0 in the grade book on Skyward.

The vocab quiz will still be this Friday even though we missed yesterday.  However, I am going to bump back the deadline for entering definitions on Wikispaces to tonight.  Therefore, if you have definitions for this week they will need to be posted on your Wikispaces page by tonight.

Blogging:
First, check to see if your blog got created.  If not, you will need to go through the steps that I led you through on Monday - let me know if you need help.  If your blog did get created then now is the time to see you how you can change your themes to make your blog look more like you want it to.  I will be showing you this so you can manipulate your blog to look how you want it to, but remember that you are not allowed class time to do this.  If you want to make changes you will have to do that on your own time (after today).

If everyone's blog is created today we are going to use your blog to embed your Internet Safety project - this will then make your Xtranormal video available on the web for everyone to view.  Once you have your video embedded on your blog you need to send me an email with a link to your blog (both partners will do this so I know that both partners have embedded the video on their blog).  Once I have received your email I will be able to watch your video and grade it.

Monday, November 26

Welcome back!

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving break, ate lots of food, and are re-energized for 4 weeks of school!

With that in mind, we only have 4 weeks of school to accomplish quite a bit.  We will be learning a new program (called Alice) that will help you to understand what a computer programmer goes through (this program is more modern than Logo and I think you will find it more interesting to use), we have 3 vocab quizzes in the next 4 weeks (Vocab quiz #8 is this Friday), we will learn to key using the keypad, you are going to create a podcast and embed it on your blog, and we still have several formatting activities to complete.

The first thing I want to get done this week is the learning of the symbol keys, so we will start today in Microsoft Word.  Turn to page 41 and type the paragraph on 17E once to get warmed up.

Then we will be moving over to page 42 to learn the # (right shift + L2), the & (left shift + R1), and the + (left shift + R4).

After learning these keys we are going to watch the video below that will help you understand one of the vocab words for this week - embed.

After learning these keys I am going to show you how you can embed an image into your blog.   This will be important for 2 reasons - 1) because you are going to have to include an image with your journal reflections from now on; and 2) because you are going to complete a formatting activity that will require you to embed an image on your blog.

Before you can embed an image you first must have an image on your computer that you are going to use.  So, the first step will be to correctly save an image to your computer so we can then embed it on your blog.
