Vocab list #10; Alice worlds; make up day

This is our last week of vocabulary words (yeah!).  Our list this week is associated with similar words that we had last week - they all are multimedia and graphics.  We have several videos we will be watching to help us understand what these words mean - here is our first video for the week (on Java):

In Alice I want to go through the 5 different sections of the interface and talk a little about each to help you understand the functions that each section provides to the Alice worlds you create.  The sections are:

Object Tree:
Details Panel:
World View:

Events Area:
Methods (or Code) Editor:

For those with missing assignment you will spend the rest of the time working on what you have not yet completed.  Anything that is missing during the 2nd quarter should get done ASAP!  A new missing assignments list is posted on the wall.

Shortened hours; complete work as needed

With the shortened hours today, you can work on anything you need to do to get stuff done.  If you want to finish the Logo handout from yesterday you can use this time to get it done.  If you want to post a definition to the Wiki spaces page I will allow that today.  If you need to write your information in Edmodo for last week's discussion I will also allow that (this is not normal...but, I've had several people tell me that Edmodo was not working last night so I am allowing you to do this because it was not working).

If you are done with everything I would like for you to continue working on trying to draw letters in Logo.

Missing work!! Practice

It is important that you take a look at the missing assignments list in the room - we have a large amount of people who have missing assignments!  Many of those people with missing assignments will change their grade if they turn in what is missing.  I will accept any late assignments up until school starts tomorrow!  If you are missing the work in Edmodo and decide to complete parts or all of that assignment, please send me an email to let me know that you entered your responses in Edmodo.

If you have nothing missing you need type the following in Word:
page 19, 9B, lines 1-10 once
page 20, 9C, lines 1-9 once
page 20, 9D, lines 1-7 once

When you get done typing the above lines, let me know so I can come look at them.  After you get done I will have something for you to do.

Time is limited!

At this point you have only 3 school days left to get any work completed that you have not yet finished and handed in.  However, each class period this week is shortened, so being a diligent worker (for those who have missing assignments) will be important in order to get any missing work completed and handed in.

FA12 - several of you have submitted FA12 to me by email.  This assignment (it is the "Project Estimate" assignment in Excel) is to be printed out and handed in.  You should have 3 pages when you are done - 1 page that shows only numbers, then when you change the document to show formulas (control/~) and print that out you will have 2 more pages.

Pay attention to the "Missing Assignment" board in the room - I will update it daily with missing assignments (just as I have been doing for the last 3 days).  If your name is on the wall in the room for an assignment get it done and handed in.  As we've talked about - 50% on an assignment is much better than receiving a 0.

Finish work

Most of this week (and what little we will have next week) will be spent tying up any loose ends.

Today, work on finishing your Alice Project #1.  Let's say for now that this will be due tomorrow - I need to gauge in all of the classes how far everyone is in order to make a determination on when this should be due.

Once you are done with that Alice project you need to work on posting your discussion to Edmodo (remember you also need to reply to at least 2 of your classmates' postings), or finish your crossword puzzle (these are both due on Friday, but you are welcome to complete them/hand them in anytime before then).

If you complete these tasks then you need to work on any missing assignments.  The missing assignments on the board are updated through last week (I do not have FA11 or FA12 in Skyward yet) - please get done what you have missing!

Make up day

Today will be a make-up day for those who have missing assignments (please see the board on the wall to see if you have missing assignments!).  If you do have a missing assignment you will have the entire hour to work on whatever assignment you need to complete.

If you have all of your assignments completed, here is what you need to do next:

Open Microsoft Word, type all lines in 14B, p. 31 twice.

Type all lines in 14D (lines 1-8) twice.  Here you will learn the 3 (left middle/2nd finger), the 6 (right index, 1st finger), and the 2 (left 3rd/ring finger).

After learning the last 3 numbers, open Logo and create the following shapes:  equilateral triangle, square, rectangle, and pentagon (remember a pentagon has 5 equal angles, and a total turtle trip is equal to 360 degrees - using that information you should be able to figure out what the angle of your turns needs to be).  Write down (you can use a Word document so you can save it) the instructions - we'll go over these tomorrow.

The crossword puzzle is due Thursday of this week.

The vocab list for this week is all about the Internet - the quiz will be Friday, Oct. 21.  This will be the first of 3 vocab lists that are related to the Internet.  People who are responsible for defining words are as follows:

3rd hour:  KatherineB, LoganC, EthanK, EmmaL, AndrewR, DakodaV
4th hour:  AnthonyB, DestinyL, MorganM, TateN, HannahS, ShelbyW
6th hour:  LindyC, HaleeG, BrileyK, KimberM, MarshallR, KendraS
7th hour:  ScottF, FrejaH, AJM, ElliottM, LoganW
8th hour:  BritnyB, SydneyH, JacobH, LukeJ, CalebP, RyanW

Remember, only one person can be posting to the wiki page at a time, so this is the procedure we are going to adopt to get this part of class completed:  1.  As a group, decide who is defining which words; 2.  the first person listed will enter their words that they have chosen to define on the wiki; 3.  once the first person has their words defined, they will immediately contact the second person on the list and let them know, then the second person defines their words and posts them on the wiki page, and after completing their part they tell the third person, and so on;  4.  anyone posting a link to a website, an image, or a video that helps to explain their selected vocab word (or words) will receive 1 extra credit point for that week (remember, if you need help remembering how this works let me know it's really easy and only takes a minute).  Note - the additional information for extra credit must be useful in helping to describe the vocab word.  In other words, if you include an image that has nothing to do with the vocab word you will not get extra credit.

If you get everything done you may go to the practice websites and practice your keying skill.  Try practicing some numbers to see how you do!
