5 parts to correct email; first assignment

Anytime you are required to send an email in this class you will need to make sure that you include the 5 parts to a correct email.  That will almost always be a part of your grade.  They are listed here:
  1. Email address
    1. Username (what comes before the @ symbol)
    2. the @ symbol
    3. email server (gmail or yahoo, for example)
    4. the period
    5. the top level domain (.com, .net, .org)
  2. Subject line
    1. explains to the reader of the email what the email is about
    2. not typed in all caps
  3. Greeting
    1. include the name of the person you are sending the email to
    2. depending on your relationship with the individual, it may be "Dear Mrs. Smith" or you might enter "James"
  4. Body
    1. Write in complete sentences
    2. if you want your email to be professional (and it needs to be in here!), avoid texting language (LOL, OMG, B4, etc.)
    3. spell check!!
  5. Signature
    1. create a signature using features in Google (done!)
    2. eliminates having to remember to type your name at the bottom
The name of the assignment is "10 facts about me".  You will need to send this to me by Friday (this is a homework assignment - you will not be allowed to complete this during class).  However, the 10 facts are going to be a little unique - here's an example of what you would need to include:

1 - I have 1 sister
2 - I have golfed at the John Deere TPC twice
3 - I went to 3 River Bandit games this summer
4 - 4 is my favorite number
5 - I have been to a Chicago Bears game 5 times
6 - I started playing the piano at age 6
7 - The house number at the address where I live is 723
8 - I have been to Lake of the Ozarks 8 times
9 - The zip code of the town I grew up in is 80759
10 - One of the cars I own is a 2010 Toyota Highlander

When you email me make sure that you include the 5 correct parts to an email.  Due Friday means that it is due by midnight on Friday night (when you send an email to me I will be able to tell when it was sent) - so you can work on this after school tomorrow but your best bet will be to complete this tonight.

The last part of class will be reviewing what we learned Tuesday, and then learning the O (R3).

First assignment

Today you are going to receive your first assignment.  But, before getting it we are going to make a small change to your Google account.  Additionally, we are going to add a contact in your Gmail as well.  So, let's sign in to your Google account and I'll show you how you can add a signature to your account and how to add a contact.

The purpose of the signature, in terms of an email account, is that you can automatically add your signature to every outgoing email message that you send.  This is useful because you should always include your name at the end of every email.

Here is how you create a contact in Gmail:
  1. Click on "Gmail" in the top left.
  2. Choose "Contacts"
  3. Click on "New Contact"
  4. Fill in appropriate information
  5. My school email address is dpardoe@dist228.org
After including your signature in your email we are going to talk about your first assignment.  The name of the assignment is "10 things about me".  You will need to send to me by Friday 10 facts about yourself (this is a homework assignment - you will not be allowed to complete this during class).  However, the 10 facts are going to be a little unique.  I'll explain this part in class - here's an example of what you would need to include:

1 - I have 1 sister
2 - I have golfed at the John Deere TPC twice
3 - I have 3 kids
4 - 4 is my favorite number
5 - I have been to a Chicago Bears game 5 times
6 - I started playing the piano at age 6
7 - The address of the house I am currently living in is 707
8 - I have been to Lake of the Ozarks 8 times
9 - The zip code of the town I grew up in is 80759
10 - One of the cars I own is a 2010 Toyota Highlander

When you send me your email you will need to make sure that you include the 5 parts to a correct email.  They are listed here:

  1. Email address
    1. Username (what comes before the @ symbol)
    2. the @ symbol
    3. email server (gmail or yahoo, for example)
    4. the period

Email signature; 10 things about me assignment

Today you are going to submit your first assignment electronically - or in other words by email.  Before you actually send your email we are going to talk about the various components of a correct email.

There are 5 parts that you need to have with every email you send (you can have more, such as Cc or Bcc or an attachment, but you should have at a minimum all of the following):
  1. email address of the person you are sending it to
  2. subject line
  3. greeting
  4. body of the email
  5. signature
There is a proper way to enter information for each of these five components.  Let's take a look at what needs to be done for each of the five:
  1. an email address actually has 5 sub-parts to it - they are:
    1. username (whatever comes before the @ symbol)
    2. @ symbol
    3. the email server ("gmail", for example)
    4. period
    5. top level domain (or TLD) - com, org, net, etc.
    6. THE EMAIL ADDRESS MUST BE SPELLED CORRECTLY!
  2. subject line
    1. explains to the reader of the email what the email is about
    2. not typed in all caps
  3. greeting
    1. include the name of the person you are sending the email to
    2. depending on your relationship with the individual, it may be "Dear Mr. Smith" or you might enter "James"
  4. body
    1. Write in complete sentences
    2. if you want your email to be professional, avoid texting language (LOL, OMG, etc.)
    3. spell check!!
  5. signature
    1. create a signature using features in Google
    2. eliminates having to remember to type your name at the bottom
Here is how you create a contact in Gmail:
  1. Click on "Gmail" in the top left.
  2. Choose "Contacts"
  3. Click on "New Contact"
  4. Fill in appropriate information
  5. My school email address is dpardoe@dist228.org

10 Facts About Me Assignment:
You are going to complete your first email assignment.  This email requires you to write 10 facts about yourself, but in an interesting way.  You will need to come up with a fact about you that is related to the number you put it next to.  Here is an example:

1.  I have one sister
2.  I have golfed at the John Deere TPC twice
3.  I have 3 kids
4.  I have been to Great America- Chicago 4 times
5.  I have 5 different email addresses that I have access to.
6.  I started playing the piano at age 6.
7.  My sister's name is Janelle - it has 7 letters in her first name.
8.  I have been to Lake of the Ozarks 8 times
9.  The zip code of the town I grew up in was 80759
10.  One of the vehicles I own was built in 2010

When you are done with this assignment you will need to email it to me.

Folders; Tool Bar/Menu Bar/Drop-down Menu; Learn 8 & 1

First we need to create a folder for Computer Applications so that we can save our files into the folder.  You may want to do this both in your account and on your flash drive.

Next, we need to go to Google (keep your fingers crossed!!!) and attach your file that you saved to an email, and then send it to me so I can grade it.

After completing those things we are going to discuss the difference between 3 important functional parts of Microsoft Word (however, we could use any Microsoft program to discuss this).  You need to be able to distinguish between a Tool bar, a Menu bar, and a drop-down menu.

Lastly we will be learning the 8 (R2) and the 1 (L4).  These will be the numbers across the top of the keyboard.

10 Facts about me; New keys; Vocab list #3

Today we will start by finishing the 10 Facts About Me assignment.  I will show you how you can finish the email "draft" that you started on Friday and then send me the email.

Once we finish that part of the class we will be working on learning new keys.  However, I want you to first warm up by typing 3E, page 8, lines 1-10.

After completing that warmup, we will learn the Left Shift key and the period.  The Left Shift Key is used to type capital letters with the right hand.  The technique is to press down the shift key (with your left little finger - L4) and then hit the key on the right hand you want to capitalize; release both and continue.  You should not be pausing when you use the Shift key.

The other key is the period.  Use your right 3rd, or ring finger (R3) to type the period.  You should space twice after a period at the end of a sentence, and space once after a period used as part of an abbreviation (Dr. Smith, for example).

These leaders need to make sure their group members have their words and are getting them defined and posted to the Wikispaces page:

3rd - B. Gatter
4th - T. Mattan
6th - C. Mcintire
7th - G. Verbeck
8h - H. Craig

Vocab Quiz #2; Gmail

You'll have a few minutes at the beginning of the class to review for the vocab quiz.  Make use of the time given you!

After the quiz, log in to your Google account but DO NOT start searching in images...just be patient until everyone is done with the quiz.

Gmail - we are going to set up a signature in Gmail today.  I think for some classes we have already done this, but I want to get everyone set up so when I receive an email from you I can tell who the email is from.  A signature is simply going to add your name to end of every email you send out without you having to do type your name in every time you send an email.  In other words, every time you send an email you won't have to type your name in BUT your name will be included.

Then, you will have your first assignment with your email account.  You are going to send me 10 Facts About Yourself (that's the name of the assignment...and what you are going to do).  But, the catch is that you have to organize the assignment in a specific way.  You need to send me 10 facts about yourself, but each fact has to be related to the number you put it next to.  For example:

1 - I have 1 sister
2 - I have been to Walt Disney World twice
3 - I have 3 pets - a dog, a cat, and a parakeet
4 - I have been to the Ozarks 4 times

And so on.  When you are working to complete this assignment, you MAY NOT! tell me you have 10 fingers, or 5 toes on your left foot.  The facts you include must be facts I would not normally know about you.

When sending an email you need to do 5 things:
  1. Include a valid email address
  2. Always! include a subject line so your reader knows what the email message is about
  3. Write the name of the person you are sending the email to at the beginning of your message ("Dear Yoda:")
  4. Write a message - and then reread it and spell check it before you send it.  Remember what you learned with Internet Safety - what you send and how it looks is a direct reflection on you!
  5. Include your name at the end of the message (not a problem if you have a signature all set up!).

Friday, September 23

Friday - finally!

It's been a busy week, and we have accomplished much!  Today we will start with taking our Vocab quiz over vocab list #2.

Once we have finished that we will be discussing and covering various formatting functions in Word.  Here's what we will cover today:  changing fonts, changing font sizes, changing the justification of information in Word, highlighting words in color, changing the font color, Bold, Italicize, Underline, bulleted lists, numbered lists, increase indent, decrease indent, undo, and redo.

In addition, since the first Formatting Activity (instructions are located below) will need to be emailed to my school email (dpardoe@dist228.org) from your Gmail account, you will also need to learn how to attach a document to your email.

I can't express enough how important it is for those people who are responsible for next week's vocab definitions to get with the other people in your group and figure out who is going to define what.  Everyone doing their small share makes the defining of words so much easier on everyone.

Also, if you have not posted your discussion to Edmodo, you will need to do that by midnight tonight.  If you need to refresh your memory on the discussion topic, you can go back to yesterday's post.

Friday, September 16

1.  The first priority today will be to take the vocab quiz.  I will give you a couple of minutes to quickly review at the beginning of the hour - then we'll take the quiz.

One note about our quizzes - there is extra credit built into them!  If you remember this week there were 11 words - but the quiz will only be worth 10 points.  So, if you get all of the questions correct then you will get 11 out of 10 points - or one extra credit point.

All of the vocab quizzes will be taken on Classmarker, so you will need to go to that website and log in - but not until Mr. Pardoe gives you the ok!!  It is critical that you remember to click on the Finish now button twice when you have completed the quiz.  If you fail to click on the button twice after completing the quiz your score will not be registered, and the only way to correct this situation is to take the quiz again.

2.  Once you have completed the quiz you may move to work with your partner.  However, realize that other people may still be working on their quiz, so please give them the courtesy of being quiet so they can concentrate on finishing.

In order to publish your movie on Xtranormal, once you have finished making all changes to the movie click on "Publish".  Once your movie has been published to the Xtranormal website, you should see a screen that looks similar to this:

In order for me to be able to watch your movie you'll need to copy the URL.  Here is where the URL is located:

To copy this click your mouse in the area where the website is located, then hold down your Apple key and click the A key (this will select the entire URL).  Next, copy it (hold down the Apple-key and click the C key).  Once you have copied it you can paste it into a new email message from your gmail account.

Send your email to:  dpardoe@dist228.org.  In your email put "Internet Safety Project" (without the quotes) in the subject line.  Then make sure to include both of the partners' names at the bottom of the email.

This all needs to be done by the end of class TODAY!

3.  If you have a missing assignment and you are all done with your Internet Safety Project now would be the perfect time to get it done and handed in.  Remember, getting partial credit is better than getting no credit!

4.  Also, there is a new discussion post that you need to make by next Friday, Sept. 23.  It is as follows:  What do you feel is the most important aspect of Internet Safety?  Why?  Explain your answer in detail.

5.  If you are done with everything you can go to the Website Resources page on the blog and practice your keying.  Only do lessons on the websites - and you should only be working on those keys that we have learned.

6.  Lastly, if you are scheduled to help define the vocab list for next week there is nothing wrong with getting a head start today.  I would suggest you quickly meet with the rest of your group members and determine who is going to define what.  Then you can post your definitions anytime after class today.
