Pizza menu

You'll have the entire hour today and tomorrow to work on your pizza menu.  At this point you should be nearly done with the inside of the menu and preparing to get started on the outside front and back panels.  I think the outside could easily be completed in one day (tomorrow), but it's always best to leave yourself a little bit of extra time in case something comes up.  This is due at the end of your hour on Tuesday, but could be turned in on Wednesday if needed.

If you feel you won't have enough time to get done with the 3 class periods left (Monday - Wednesday) then I would highly recommend you either come in during a time here at school that will work for you (before school, lunch recess, etc.), or you save the pizza menu to your Google drive and you work on it at home.

There is a new posting of missing assignments on the wall.  Remember, if you have anything missing that you want to turn in it must be turned in no later than Wednesday, Dec. 17th!!  I will not be accepting any assignments after that date.

Crossword puzzle 1-7 due today

You need to hand in your crossword puzzle - please make sure that you have written your name at the top.

Your priorities for today are as follows:

1. Complete 3 of the timed writings on the Free Typing Game website.  Choose a different one of the Classic Tales (#26 - #35) stories to complete for each of the timed writings you do.  Write your best score on the sheet on the wall.
2. Complete test #25 - that's the 10-key lesson test - you'll use your keypad to complete this.  It's been a while since we've worked on these so this will be a good review.
3. Complete any missing work during class.  Check the pages on the wall - if you get anything done it might be wise to cross it off so you aren't confused the next time you look at the sheet on the wall (I can give you a Sharpie if you would like one).
4. If you do not have any missing assignments you can go to the practice websites.  I will be selecting individuals to compete in the bracket competition.  We have several individual competitions that need to get completed to get brackets updated.
5. If you have not yet posted definitions to the wiki spaces page for next week now would be a good time to get that done.  I don't normally offer class time, but I'll allow it since I'm in a good mood today  :-)

Complete and submit FA9; crossword puzzle due tomorrow

You will have the hour to complete FA9.  Once you are done it should be emailed to me.

Alos don't forget that the crossword puzzle is due tomorrow.

There are new missing assignment sheets posted on the wall - take a look.  We had an extraordinary amount of people NOT hand in FA8 for whatever reason.  If you are done with FA9 you should be working on any missing assignments you have.

Along these same lines, and also regarding FA8, there were many students who either sent me a link to their blog but didn't send me a Word document attached to their email, or who don't have their blog URL in their Gmail signature and did send me the Word document as an attachment.  You had to have both (URL to your blog and Word document attached) in order to get full credit.  I would highly recommend that you check your Gmail to see if this situation applies to you.  AND...if you don't have your URL as part of your signature you should get that done (we did that in class as a group).

If you are done with FA9 and you have no missing assignments I might have you complete the bracket challenge - it will depend on who you are competing against and where you are in the bracket.  If you are not working on the bracket challenge you can go to the practice websites - your speed skin must be on your keyboard!

End of 1st Quarter

As we have talked about all week, today is the last day of the Quarter.  Make it a good one!!

We will review for the quiz at the beginning of class, and then when I let you know you can go to Classmarker and take the quiz.

Once you have completed the quiz, if you have any missing assignments you are to work on whatever is missing.  If you do not have any missing assignments and you are "behind" with the speed test tournament, then I'm going to have you compete today to try and catch up so that we have everyone in the same spot.  This means many of you will not be competing in the tournament today - I just want to get everyone in the same place since we had several people last week that were absent when we did this.

If you have everything done then you are welcome to go to the practice websites after the vocab quiz.

Catch up day

Today we are going to use to catch up with whatever you don't have done.  Here are some possibilities:

Crossword puzzle 1-6
Any formatting activity that has been due during the 4th quarter (FA2 - FA8)
Wiki spaces definitions
Vocab quiz make ups (Quizzes 6 - 8)
Spring Break blog post

If you have been doing what has been asked and you have everything completed you have three choices:

Practice websites
Read a book
Homework from another class

As I've stated before, it is important for you to get your assignments submitted as any score you receive would be much better than a zero.  For those with missing assignments you'll notice that your grade dramatically improves once you turn in an assignment that had previously been scored as a zero and score points - depending on the assignment and your grade sometimes as much as one whole letter grade!

Vocab quiz #8; Word-it puzzles

Today we are going to review for the vocab quiz (as normal) at the beginning of the hour.  I do have 2 more things I want to cover regarding the vocab list so I'll talk about those at the beginning of the hour.  When I am done you'll then have time to look over the definitions.

Once you are done with the quiz you should complete any missing assignments that you have not yet turned in.  This is the second day in a row that you have had class time to complete missing assignments, which is really more than I should be giving you.  Please use this time appropriately.

If you are all caught up with assignments I have a handout of Word-it puzzles that you can work on (nothing for a grade - just for fun).

STARTING TODAY: ANYONE CAUGHT WITH THEIR SPEED SKIN OFF OF THEIR KEYBOARD WILL LOSE 10% ON THE NEXT ASSIGNMENT.  YOU WILL LOSE 10% EVERY TIME I SEE YOU WITH YOUR SPEED SKIN OFF THE KEYBOARD, SO IT IS POSSIBLE TO LOSE MORE THAN 10% IN ONE ASSIGNMENT.


If you have not yet finished FA6 you will have class time to get that done.  If you are done then you need to finish any missing work that you don't have turned in.  I have not yet graded FA5 so if you did not complete it you need to get it turned in ASAP.  If you don't have any missing work then you need to complete the Alice tutorial from Monday - here is the website again:

Vocab definitions due; Alice; missing work

A reminder to those who have vocab definitions due for week 8 - those need to be completed on the Wiki spaces page by tonight.

KEEP YOUR SPEED SKIN ON YOUR KEYBOARD AT ALL TIMES!

For those students in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd hours you will need to finish FA5 during class today.  When you are done it should be printed, signed, and then handed in.  

If you complete FA5, or you are already done with FA5, you need to then work on the tutorial in Alice - it can be located here:  http://www.cs.duke.edu/csed/alice09/tutorialsAlice3/gettingStartedTutorials/witchCauldron/witchTutorial.pdf

To open Alice, go to your Finder menu (that's the square "smiley face" on the dock).  Click on Applications, then find a folder labeled "Alice3".  Open that folder and inside you will find an icon of Alice - double click on it to open the program.

If you complete the Alice tutorial then you can either work on a missing assignment for Computer Applications, or on the practice websites located on the blog.  

HTML, ISP, and IP addresses;

We are going to discuss the difference between ISP and IP addresses first, then we will look at what HTML is.

After covering those vocab words you will have the rest of the hour to work on any assignment that needs to be completed - whether it is for Computer Apps or for another class does not matter.  I'll even give you the option to post your vocab definitions today during class if you didn't get that done.  You will be busy the entire hour.  If you want to play the practice games from the practice websites on the blog that would be great!  But, you'll have to do it with your speed skin on your keyboard.

Internet Safety - last week; Vocab week #5; missing assignments

This will be the last week that you will be allowed to work on the Internet Safety project.  It will be due at the end of the hour on Thursday.

Additionally we have another list of vocab words this week - list #5 (it is the first of 3 Internet lists).  As usual the vocab definitions need to be completed by Tuesday night and we will have our quiz on Friday.

Lastly, I have printed out new missing assignments lists - if you haven't checked Skyward recently you may want to look at the new sheets posted on the wall.

Missing assignments; vocab definitions due tonight; practice blind assignment

If you look at the west wall (that's the wall opposite the dry erase board) you will see a printout of missing assignments by class.  I try to keep this updated every week - if you have missing assignments your name, along with the assignment, will be listed here.  This is the same information that can be found on Skyward, so it should not be a surprise.  I just like to make sure that you are able to view what you are missing.

If you have a missing assignment that you turn in or complete you may want to go to your class list and cross off your name and the assignment so you are not confused about what is missing.

Today's reminder - if you have vocab definitions for week 2 you need to make sure that you get those definitions completed and posted to the wikispaces page by tonight.  Speaking of Wikispaces - I've already been contacted by several people to help me help them remember their Wikispaces username.  This is exactly the reason I spent yesterday showing you how to setup a Google Doc file that holds your usernames and passwords to websites - this is now your responsibility.  Creating the file with that information will go a long way towards helping you keep track of that information.

Today we are going to do a little exercise I call blind assignment.  We will warm up first, and then I'll explain how this works.  Today's exercise will be practice, but we will be doing the same thing on Thursday for a grade.  Let's get to it!

Continue work to finish the semester

Today you will continue to complete any work that needs to be done.  I would recommend that you do two things in that regard:

1. Check your email.  I have graded quite a few assignments and have sent emails regarding the assignment - in other words if you didn't do things correctly I may not have graded your assignment, sent you an email with instructions on what you need to do to get a grade for an assignment, and am waiting for you to resend me an email.
2. Check to make sure you have all of the vocab quizzes completed.  Some of you have missed time and may not have taken a vocab quiz.  If so, you'll want to get these done, and you can only do that here in class.  Let me know that you are taking one of the quizzes and then you can do it.  Also, if you missed a quiz because you were gone and then you came in at a different time and completed it and I have not entered it into Skyward I need to know so I can change that and your grade can improve.

As we talked about yesterday, you should be working to complete the Alice project.  If you are done with everything and you want to do the podcast I can send you to the computer lab to get that finished.

FA10; missing assignments; Quiz treat winners....

Today you will be working on Formatting Activity 10, which will introduce you to inserting ClipArt images into your Word document.

I also want to remind you that you need to have any missing assignments to me by next Monday, May 20th.  Any assignment submitted after that date will not get graded.  Even if your assignment is late you will want to get it turned in so you can get some credit (some credit is better than no credit!).

And, the class winner of last week's "Quiz-off", who earns a candy treat sometime this week for the entire class, was Hour............


FA10 -

Java; Finish FA9; Mother's Day card; Podcast

Again, you have one day left to submit your podcast.  Make sure that you embed the podcast on your blog and then you send me a link to your blog.

This next video we will watch today explains what Java is (Java is on the vocab list for this week).

After watching the video you will have time to finish FA9 if you did not get it done yesterday.  If you are done you need to complete any missing work.  If you have no missing assignments you could work on creating a Mother's Day card for your mom and/or grandma (although you won't be able to print it out here unless you want to print it in black and white).  You could insert shapes, text box(es), and Word Art to make it creatively beautiful!

Don't forget that you have a vocab quiz tomorrow!

Vocab Quiz; Finish FA5; email blog post; missing assignments; Alice

There are several different things that you may need to work on today.  First we will all review for the vocab quiz.  After being given several minutes to review we will all go to Classmarker to take the quiz.

Here are the other items that you need to get done:

1. Finish FA5 if you did not get it completed yesterday.  Remember that this must be printed out and that you must sign your name at the bottom between the complimentary close and where your name is typed.
2. Complete the blog post that was given to you on Monday.  Here is the writing prompt:  "In what ways do you see learning how to format documents in Microsoft Word useful, or important, for your future?" When you get done you need to send me an email with a link to your blog so I can read your response.
3. If you have missing assignments now is the time to get these done.  The missing assignment list on the wall has not been updated since Tuesday, but you should know which assignments since then you have not turned in.  Zeroes have a devastatingly bad effect on your grade - getting some credit (even if it is only 50%) will greatly improve your current grade.
4. If you have all of the above done, and you have no missing assignments, you may work in Alice and complete the Fish Fairy world. 

Missing assignments; vocab; Creating your blog

I have now posted a new set of missing assignment lists.  I am also handing out a slip of paper to all of those who have missing assignments.  Remember, this Friday is the last day of the 3rd Quarter and any missing assignments after Friday will stay as a 0 in the grade book on Skyward.

The vocab quiz will still be this Friday even though we missed yesterday.  However, I am going to bump back the deadline for entering definitions on Wikispaces to tonight.  Therefore, if you have definitions for this week they will need to be posted on your Wikispaces page by tonight.

Blogging:
First, check to see if your blog got created.  If not, you will need to go through the steps that I led you through on Monday - let me know if you need help.  If your blog did get created then now is the time to see you how you can change your themes to make your blog look more like you want it to.  I will be showing you this so you can manipulate your blog to look how you want it to, but remember that you are not allowed class time to do this.  If you want to make changes you will have to do that on your own time (after today).

If everyone's blog is created today we are going to use your blog to embed your Internet Safety project - this will then make your Xtranormal video available on the web for everyone to view.  Once you have your video embedded on your blog you need to send me an email with a link to your blog (both partners will do this so I know that both partners have embedded the video on their blog).  Once I have received your email I will be able to watch your video and grade it.
