Internet Safety and passwords

Today we will be covering passwords.  Below are 4 different websites that offer the ability to help you generate a password for a website.  Having unique passwords on the various websites you have usernames for will be very valuable in the future.  Right now you probably don't have a bunch of websites that you have a username with that protects your private information...but you will in the future, and using different passwords on those websites will be crucial for your Internet Safety, and for your financial safety as well.  Imagine someone who has the same password for their checking account, savings account, retirement account, cell phone provider, cable provider, etc. - if a person were to figure out what their ONE password is they would really be able to make that person's life completely miserable!

Here are the four websites:

Norton Password Generator
Random Password Generator
New Password Generator
Password Bird

After looking at these websites we will begin looking at Go Animate!  This will be the website we use to create your Internet Safety video.  The website has some pretty cool characteristics that we will go over...my guess is by the time you get done creating your video you will be much better at using the website than I am.

You and your partner will need to create a username and password.  You will be solely responsible for remembering what that information is - I am not going to ask what your username and passwords are so make sure to keep them written down in your Google Doc that houses your passwords.

There are some restrictions with the website, the most notable of which (at least for our cause) is that you only are allowed 2 mins per video.  To further restrict our goal of creating an Internet Safety video in which you cover 4 topics, you can only have one action and one character talking per scene. I would recommend thinking about creating 2 videos where you use each video to talk about 2 of your topics (this is not a requirement, but after looking at the following instructions you may find that creating 2 videos will make your job easier).

As for your video, you will want to keep the following in mind as you create your video:  would a 3rd grader be able to understand your video?  Do you explain your topic in easy to understand terms (terms that a 3rd grader would understand)?  Do you provide a lot of details so that a 3rd grader could watch your video and then NOT have any questions afterwards?  If you can keep those things in mind as you create your video you will go a long way towards solving the first two criteria of your grade (Clarity of Presentation and Depth of Understanding).

How to choose a safe password - Explania

Here are a couple of websites that you could use to help you create a safe password:

Password Bird
Pass Plex

After watching today's video on Choosing a Safe Password, we will again be working in our groups to complete our Internet Safety videos.  Here are several helpful tips as you work to complete your Internet Safety movie:

  • you cannot have enough details!
  • try to make your information easy to understand by assuming your audience will be a group of 3rd graders.
  • cover 4 different areas.
  • save your information often, but do not Publish yet!
If you complete your video, let me know.

IF IT IS YOUR WEEK TO DO VOCABULARY DEFINITIONS, GET YOUR DEFINITIONS POSTED TO THE WIKISPACES PAGE BY MIDNIGHT TOMORROW!  SEE ME IF YOU NEED HELP (BUT DON'T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE).  THIS IS HOMEWORK.

TGIF!!

INTERNET SAFETY:
Today you will have all hour to work on doing research for your Internet Safety project.  Since today is the last "official" day you will have to conduct your research you need to try and get your information gathered and completed by the end of the day today.  If you finish your research today start thinking about how you want your characters in your movie to talk about the information you have gathered.

Using Xtranormal will require you to act a lot like a script writer and a director for a movie.  When we talk about using Xtranormal, you will probably want to use 2 characters - it will make the flow of presenting your information much easier.  Therefore, what do you want each character to talk about when it's their turn to talk?  Will you have each character do some of the talking about each of the 4 different areas, or will you split it up so that character #1 talks about topic A and topic B, and character #2 talks about topic C and topic D (or some other arrangement)?

VOCABULARY:
As for the 11 files that I sent you yesterday to your gmail, 10 of those should be Microsoft Word files and have vocab words (listed as "Week 1", "Week 2", and so on) in them.  The other file, which is a spreadsheet file, should have a listing of everyone in class with a bunch of X's on the page.  The X's mark the weeks where you will be responsible for defining the words for that week.  You should notice you have several "partners" that will help you define the words for that week.

As for what you enter on the wiki, the most important thing to enter is the word's definition.  MAKE SURE YOU ARE DEFINING THE WORD SO IT IS EASY TO UNDERSTAND!  If you read the definition and you don't understand what the definition is, no one else is going to understand it either.  In addition, adding links to videos, pictures, or websites are highly encouraged as doing so will help everyone understand the vocab word better.  When you get done defining the word put your first and last name in parentheses next to the definition so you get credit for doing your job!

My suggestion is at the beginning of the week you quickly meet with the other 4-5 people and decide who is going to define which words - that way you are organized and not having multiple definitions of the same word.

WIKISPACES:
You will use the following wiki to post definitions of words:  gmsamazon*.wikispaces.com (where the * is your class hour that you have Computer Apps - so 6th hour would enter gmsamazon6.wikispaces.com).  Once you go to the website you will be allowed to ask to join - you'll need to create a username (another one of these - UUGGHHH!!).  Use your first name and last initial for your username, create a password, and enter your email address.  Once you've done this I will receive a notification and I will allow you to join.  For those of you who think you can be sneaky - you will not be given permission to join a wikispace that belongs to another class.  If you try to join another class I will just block you from it.

The overriding concept here is that everyone shares in the responsibility of helping everyone else learn.  If it's your week to define a couple of words, then make sure that you accomplish your job - everyone else in class is expecting you to help them so they can get a good grade on the vocab quiz.  When it's their turn to define words you will expect the same - you want them to do their job so you can do well on the quiz.  Here is a teamwork quote that I think is appropriate: "Teamwork is the ability to work towards a common goal.  It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results."

  1. The first thing we will accomplish today is completing the "Correct Fingers" assignment at Classmarker. I will have to give you your username and password - so this is again another username and password that you will have to remember.   Therefore, we will use Google docs after we are done with the assignment to create a password "account".
  2. Google Docs - this is a great place you can use to save all your passwords for the various different websites that you will register for.  This is not something that you have to do, but as I will show you it is a great way to store your passwords.  What I really like is that I can access this anywhere there is an Internet connection - including using a smartphone if you have one. (the below picture is a link - when you click on it it will open in a new window)
  3. Here are several websites that you can use to create a password. These are convenient if you just want a quick solution to a password - or if you're just tired of trying to think of a clever password!
  4. Password BirdPass Plex Password Generator Strong Password Generator
  5. The rest of the day will be used practicing the keys we have learned.  Here are the websites that you can use to practice (and you can also obviously use these at home if you wish to):
  6. Free Typing GamesFree Online Typing Games - online tutor Power Typing lessons Typing Web tutor

All of these websites are located on the Website Resources page on the blog- therefore they are available for you to use at home if you need to practice.

  1. Review all keys learned.
  2. Learn the left shift key and the period (.).
  3. 4. Here are several websites that you can use to create a password. These are convenient if you feel that trying to create something clever gets difficult - or if you're just tired of trying to think of a password!
  5. Password BirdPass Plex Password Generator
  6. We will create a "signature" for your gmail account today as well. If you remember, when we set up our email account I gave you several "golden rules" of emailing. One of those rules that you should follow is to always include your name at the bottom of the email. A signature allows you to do that without having to type in your name every time you send an email - very convenient!
  7. If we have time we will also learn how to create contacts in Gmail.  My guess is some of you already know how to do this - especially those that already had an email account.  It's not difficult - you just need to learn how to do it.
REMINDER!!  Correct fingers assignment tomorrow - be prepared!
