Pizza menu

You'll have the entire hour today and tomorrow to work on your pizza menu.  At this point you should be nearly done with the inside of the menu and preparing to get started on the outside front and back panels.  I think the outside could easily be completed in one day (tomorrow), but it's always best to leave yourself a little bit of extra time in case something comes up.  This is due at the end of your hour on Tuesday, but could be turned in on Wednesday if needed.

If you feel you won't have enough time to get done with the 3 class periods left (Monday - Wednesday) then I would highly recommend you either come in during a time here at school that will work for you (before school, lunch recess, etc.), or you save the pizza menu to your Google drive and you work on it at home.

There is a new posting of missing assignments on the wall.  Remember, if you have anything missing that you want to turn in it must be turned in no later than Wednesday, Dec. 17th!!  I will not be accepting any assignments after that date.

Vocab Quiz #10 - the last one!; Pizza menu design work

Today is the last of the vocab quizzes!  As usual you will be given time at the beginning of class to study - do not go to Classmarker until I tell you to do so.

As soon as you complete the quiz you may continue your work on the pizza menu.

Thursday, December 11

Flash video; pizza menu

Today we will watch the last video related to our vocab lists.  This, in my opinion, is the coolest of all of the videos we have watched!  It is amazing to see what you can do with this software!

In addition to watching the video I will be showing you how to add the text box borders that are talked about in step 10 on page 2.  The text box/borders are only needed for the inside of the menu - they should surround the 8 different categories on the menu (it acts as a good way to visually separate the 8 different categories).

Finish FA1; Vocab week #3

THIS WEEK:

*Learn new keys:  Z, colon (:), Caps lock key, Question mark (?), Tab key,
*Speed Test practice
*Technique grade
*Vocab quiz #3 (list is WINDOWS)
*Formatting Activity 2

Today we will complete FA1 and submit that to me, via email, for a grade.  Before you send anything with your email we need to cover a few things regarding submitting assignments to me using your email.

  1. When you submit an assignment through your email you must include the 5 parts to a proper email (email address, subject line, greeting, body, and signature).  We've already covered this information so this should be a simple reminder.  However, if you do not have a signature in your email account you were probably gone the day we did that and you will need to create a signature (either ask a person sitting next to you or see me outside of class).
  2. When you submit an assignment to me you will need to attach a Microsoft Word file - DO NOT ATTACH A GOOGLE DOC!  Usually what happens when you attach a Google Doc is you have to give me permission to see it, and some people will forget to do that.  More importantly, some of the formatting used in Word gets lost when the document is transferred over to a Google Doc, and then when I go to grade it your document will not "look" correct.  ALWAYS ATTACH A MICROSOFT WORD FILE!!
  3. Save your formatting activities in at least two places.  My suggestion is to save them to your Google drive and to a flash drive.  DO NOT SAVE TO THE DESKTOP!!
  4. I will show you how to upload a file to your Google Drive - if you have a bad memory take notes.  This is important and it is something you need to know how to do, not just for this class but for your future in this school district as there are many teacher who will expect you to have the skill of saving a file to your drive.  You also need to know how to download a file from your drive to your computer, so we'll go over that as well.
After completing this and emailing your FA1 to me we will review by going to the websites.  What I would like for you to do first is go to the Free Typing Games website and try 3 speed tests - we're not going to record these, but let's just practice.  After doing those then you can go to any of the practice websites on the Website resources page on the blog and practice.  Make sure to keep your speed skin on the keyboard!

As a reminder this is vocab week #3, so if you are responsible for defining words for this week those need to be posted by tomorrow night (Tuesday, Sept. 16).  If you missed last week's quiz on Friday you will need to come in outside of class time and complete it.

Thursday, September 4

Review; Blind assignment

We will start with a review from yesterday - we had very little time to practice the right shift key at the end of the hour so we will spend some time today reviewing that key along with everything else.

Once we spend some time reviewing we will be completing our blind assignment.  This will involve 20 words - I will spell each word to you so you need not worry about being a bad speller - and we will print this out and hand it in for a grade.  I will have several other instructions that I will give you before we start.

As a reminder, if you have vocabulary words that need to be defined for next week they need to be done by next Tuesday night.  That's still plenty of time...this is just a friendly reminder to get that done.  If you want to come in here at school (outside of class time) then you are welcome to do so, just make sure you let me know when you are coming in.

Friday, August 22

Review keys learned and learn T; 10 Facts about me assignment due tonight!

To start today we will review the O that we learned yesterday.  After reviewing that key we will be learning the T (L1).  Remember, after today you will have already learned 50% of the letters on the keyboard!

Once we get done with the above we are going to take the short time we have left and review.  We are going to use a couple of different websites to break up the monotony and get out of using the book.  Here's the first website:

Lesson 1

Once you get done with Lesson 1 go on to Lessons 2 and 3.

If you complete the above you need to go this next website to practice:

Sense-Lang.org

On that website you can complete any of the lessons from Lessons 1 - 5.  If you complete all of these lessons you need to continue on to the following website:

Free Typing Games

You can work on Lessons 1 - 4, 10, and 15 on this website.

REMINDER: 10 FACTS ABOUT ME ASSIGNMENT DUE TONIGHT!

Thursday, August 21

5 parts to correct email; first assignment

Anytime you are required to send an email in this class you will need to make sure that you include the 5 parts to a correct email.  That will almost always be a part of your grade.  They are listed here:
  1. Email address
    1. Username (what comes before the @ symbol)
    2. the @ symbol
    3. email server (gmail or yahoo, for example)
    4. the period
    5. the top level domain (.com, .net, .org)
  2. Subject line
    1. explains to the reader of the email what the email is about
    2. not typed in all caps
  3. Greeting
    1. include the name of the person you are sending the email to
    2. depending on your relationship with the individual, it may be "Dear Mrs. Smith" or you might enter "James"
  4. Body
    1. Write in complete sentences
    2. if you want your email to be professional (and it needs to be in here!), avoid texting language (LOL, OMG, B4, etc.)
    3. spell check!!
  5. Signature
    1. create a signature using features in Google (done!)
    2. eliminates having to remember to type your name at the bottom
The name of the assignment is "10 facts about me".  You will need to send this to me by Friday (this is a homework assignment - you will not be allowed to complete this during class).  However, the 10 facts are going to be a little unique - here's an example of what you would need to include:

1 - I have 1 sister
2 - I have golfed at the John Deere TPC twice
3 - I went to 3 River Bandit games this summer
4 - 4 is my favorite number
5 - I have been to a Chicago Bears game 5 times
6 - I started playing the piano at age 6
7 - The house number at the address where I live is 723
8 - I have been to Lake of the Ozarks 8 times
9 - The zip code of the town I grew up in is 80759
10 - One of the cars I own is a 2010 Toyota Highlander

When you email me make sure that you include the 5 correct parts to an email.  Due Friday means that it is due by midnight on Friday night (when you send an email to me I will be able to tell when it was sent) - so you can work on this after school tomorrow but your best bet will be to complete this tonight.

The last part of class will be reviewing what we learned Tuesday, and then learning the O (R3).

Tuesday, May 13

Crossword Puzzle; Learn apostrophe ('), hyphen (-), and quotation marks (")

Today you will be receiving a crossword puzzle that will be due this Friday.  This crossword puzzle contains vocab words from vocab lists 1 through 3.  This is a homework assignment - you will not receive class time to complete this.  Additionally, you are welcome to turn this in anytime before Friday, but it must be turned in no later than Friday to earn full credit.

Today we are going to learn 3 new symbols on the keyboard, but you'll only be learning 2 new keys.  The apostrophe (R4), the hyphen (R4), and the quotation marks (Left Shift + R4) are the new symbols.  As you will notice from above, you also will be using your right little finger on all three of these symbols - it's going to get a workout today!

Just to give you an idea of where we are going - tomorrow we are going to start our Internet Safety unit.  When we work on Internet Safety you will be working on a website to create a short video.  The website will require a username and password.

After the Internet Safety project we will head back to learning the ten numbers across the top of the keyboard and the symbols on the numbers.  That should get us pretty close to the end of the first 9 weeks of second semester.

Thursday, February 6

GPS and router video; blind assignment; Learn M and X

We are going to start with watching two videos - one explains the GPS and the other explains what a router is (you should remember me talking a little bit about a router from last week).

Next is the router video:

We will take a few minutes to warm up for the blind assignment.  Today's process will be slightly different than what we did in class on Tuesday, and the difference is just that we are printing out today (which we didn't do on Tuesday).  Therefore, when we get done I will explain what I want you to do.

The rules for this assignment are as follows:  if you pull your document back on your screen you will lose .5 pts; any misspelled word loses you .5 pts; every time you forget to hit return between words will  reduce your score by .5 pts; and if you take your speed skin off while we are working on this you will lose .5 pts every time you are caught.

After completing all of this we will also learn two new keys - the M (R1) and the X (L3).

Tuesday, January 14

First assignment

Today you are going to receive your first assignment.  But, before getting it we are going to make a small change to your Google account.  Additionally, we are going to add a contact in your Gmail as well.  So, let's sign in to your Google account and I'll show you how you can add a signature to your account and how to add a contact.

The purpose of the signature, in terms of an email account, is that you can automatically add your signature to every outgoing email message that you send.  This is useful because you should always include your name at the end of every email.

Here is how you create a contact in Gmail:
  1. Click on "Gmail" in the top left.
  2. Choose "Contacts"
  3. Click on "New Contact"
  4. Fill in appropriate information
  5. My school email address is dpardoe@dist228.org
After including your signature in your email we are going to talk about your first assignment.  The name of the assignment is "10 things about me".  You will need to send to me by Friday 10 facts about yourself (this is a homework assignment - you will not be allowed to complete this during class).  However, the 10 facts are going to be a little unique.  I'll explain this part in class - here's an example of what you would need to include:

1 - I have 1 sister
2 - I have golfed at the John Deere TPC twice
3 - I have 3 kids
4 - 4 is my favorite number
5 - I have been to a Chicago Bears game 5 times
6 - I started playing the piano at age 6
7 - The address of the house I am currently living in is 707
8 - I have been to Lake of the Ozarks 8 times
9 - The zip code of the town I grew up in is 80759
10 - One of the cars I own is a 2010 Toyota Highlander

When you send me your email you will need to make sure that you include the 5 parts to a correct email.  They are listed here:

  1. Email address
    1. Username (what comes before the @ symbol)
    2. the @ symbol
    3. email server (gmail or yahoo, for example)
    4. the period
    5. the top level domain (.com, .net, .org)
  2. Subject line
    1. explains to the reader of the email what the email is about
    2. not typed in all caps
  3. Greeting
    1. include the name of the person you are sending the email to
    2. depending on your relationship with the individual, it may be "Dear Mr. Smith" or you might enter "James"
  4. Body
    1. Write in complete sentences
    2. if you want your email to be professional, avoid texting language (LOL, OMG, etc.)
    3. spell check!!
  5. Signature
    1. create a signature using features in Google (done!)
    2. eliminates having to remember to type your name at the bottom

FA4; spam video

Don't forget that tomorrow we have a vocab quiz over list #6 - Internet #2.

Here is another video...this one will explain Spam:

We have a couple of things that I need to finish showing you regarding the setting of tabs.  Once I have completed that you will have time to work on FA4.

Activity 4 -

Wednesday, October 30

Learn 1, 2, 3, 0, and . on keypad; FA4

**REMINDER - VOCAB WORDS NEEDS TO BE DEFINED ON THE WIKI SPACES PAGE BY TONIGHT!!**

To start today we will complete the last part of learning the keypad - we will use another handout today to learn the 1, 2, 3, 0, and period.

After completing the keypad work we are going to learn how to set tabs in Word, and then you'll be working on FA4, which is embedded below.

Wednesday, October 23

Netiquette; blank keyboard assignment; symbol practice

Today we are going to begin by going over some information regarding Internet Safety.  The following information is called netiquette, which is a combination of Internet and etiquette - so these are suggested rules of etiquette that one should follow when communicating online.  There are 10 rules and they can be found here:  http://networketiquette.net

Once we have covered that information we will review the keyboard.  Let's go to the Sense-Lang website and click on "BBC News" and choose one of the stories to work with.  We will take a few minutes to review, and then we will complete the assignment.

After completing the assignment we will go back and review from Monday the new symbols we have learned.  The lessons are located at the FreeTypingGames website - the objective is to complete Lessons 24-29 at a proficiency level of 15 words per minute or better.

Friday, October 18

Finish FA2; crossword puzzle 1-4

**THIS IS ANOTHER REMINDER TO GET YOUR VOCAB DEFINITIONS POSTED TO THE WIKI SPACES PAGE IF YOU HAVE VOCAB WORDS YOU NEED TO DEFINE FOR NEXT WEEK!!**

Today you need to finish FA2 that we started yesterday.  Please read the instructions carefully!

After completing the formatting activity you will need to complete a crossword puzzle.  The crossword puzzle is a vocabulary review from the first 4 vocab lists that we have had.  You will be given class time to complete this as well, but if you are not able to get this done in class today then it is homework over the weekend.  It is due at the beginning of the hour on Monday.

If you get done with both the formatting activity and the crossword puzzle you need to go to the practice websites on the blog and practice your keying.

Wednesday, October 9

Embed your Internet Safety project movie

Today you are going to embed your Internet Safety Project video onto the blog that we made yesterday.  After embedding your movie on your blog, you will need to send me an email with the link to your blog.

Friday, April 5

Complete assignments; Begin Alice tutorials

Today you will have the hour to complete any work that you have not yet completed.   That could be either of the assignments we've had this week (the blogging assignment or FA3), or it could be an assignment that we've previously worked on that you have not handed in.  Use today to get done what you need to get done.

If you have all of the assignments completed, and you have no missing assignments, then you should begin the Alice tutorials.  To open Alice, go to your Finder menu and choose Applications.  Once you have opened the Applications you will find a software program called Alice.  Open it.

Once you have Alice open there will be 4 tutorials that you can work through to help you learn a little bit about how Alice works (we'll learn more at the beginning of next week).  Today you need to start with the Tutorials (the red arrow in the image below points to the Tutorial tab that you need to click on once you've opened Alice); then you can move through the tutorials in order (shown with the blue arrows in the image).

Monday, February 25

Vocab week #4; Internet Safety

Several things to start the week off with:

  1. There is a vocab quiz this week.  If you are responsible for defining words you should have your definitions to your words posted by Tuesday night.  Check here to see if it is your week.
  2. There were quite a few people who did not turn in their crossword puzzle that was due on Friday.  You should be turning it in ASAP!  I have one puzzle that was turned into my mailbox but that does not have a name on it - if you think it belongs to you then I would suggest putting your name on it so you get credit.
  3. Speaking of handing in assignments - do not turn them into the office.  When you submit a completed assignment that is physically handed in, hand it in in class.
  4. Extensions - this is one of the vocab words for this week.  We will discuss it's importance today in class.

Here is a video for Internet Safety.  You may want or need to take notes to incorporate what you learn here into your Internet Safety video.

Wednesday, January 30

10 Facts about Me assignment

Several of you did not post your definitions to the wikispaces page - not a good start.  DON'T FORGET!  TOMORROW IS YOUR FIRST VOCAB QUIZ - BE READY!

To begin today you need to open Word and review from yesterday with the M and the X.  Again, make sure you are using the correct fingers!

After completing your warmup you are going to start working on your first in-class assignment.  The assignment is an email assignment that is very simple.  You will be sending me this email, and in the email you will write down 10 facts about yourself.  However, each fact has to be related to the number that it is next to.  If you watch this video it will explain what you are to do:

Again, here are the steps you need to complete EVERYTIME you send an email:

1.  type in the correct email (usually the two biggest mistakes people make are misspelling the email, or typing in the wrong domain name - for example .org instead of .com)
2.  always, always, always include a subject line! (this tells the reader why you are sending the email)
3.  type the name of the person you are sending the email to at the top of the message box
4.  type in your message
5.  type in your name (if you have a signature this is taken care of - 4th hour we'll have to take care of creating a signature when I return because I think I forgot to show you how to do this)

The message part of your email will include 10 facts about you.  To reiterate, you need to include 10 facts about yourself that I wouldn't know about you otherwise.  In other words, you CAN'T include "I hav e 10 toes" for fact #10, or "I have 2 hands" for fact #2, or "I have 1 mother", and so on.  These are all facts that I already know - you must include facts that I wouldn't know about you just by looking at you.  Here is a small example:
  1. I have one sister
  2. I have been to Great America-Chicago twice
  3. I have 3 kids
  4. I have been to Lake of the Ozarks 4 times.
When you are done you will email me your assignment.  My email is dpardoe@dist228.org.

Friday, November 2

Crossword puzzle due; Reflection on blog; Finish FA5

**REMINDER** If you are responsible for defining words for the vocabulary list for next week you need to get that done by next Tuesday.  The words have already been posted on the wikispaces page - you just need to provide the definition.  This is homework and should NOT be completed during class time!

Please hand in your crossword puzzle as soon as you get in class - it is due!  Make sure to put your name at the top of your paper.

You also need to finish FA5 - it is due today.  Don't forget to sign the letter when you are done!

You need to enter your reflection on your blog.  After this week I will be reading the weekly posts that you have entered on your blog.  Again, they should be on your journal page, not as posts on the homepage of your blog.  To check to see if your journal has been entered on the journal page as you were instructed to do, enter the following in the URL bar:

nameofyourblog.blogspot.com/p/journal.html

(where nameofyourblog is whatever you named your blog and shows up in the URL bar when you go to your blog)

If you finish everything I have another Logo handout for you to work on.  When completing this handout you need to write the instructions for the design using a repeat statement.  You will need to use Logo when working on this handout.
