WEBSITE RESOURCES

Practice Websites:

The following websites are resources that we will use in class to help us become better at keyboarding.  These resources also can obviously be used at home - I would highly encourage you to use them at home if you need to practice and improve.

10 Fast Fingers - 10 fast fingers lets you test your typing speed. Just start typing and see how fast you can type. Are you faster than everybody else?

Type Racer - Increase your speed while racing against others.

Sense Language - This typing program allows users to create their own typing activities or use the website's standardized lessons.

FREETYPINGGAMES - this website has many lessons, tests, and games to help learn the keyboard.  In addition, you can post your score on any of the tests and games that you complete to a scoreboard that shows national scores of students who have posted their score from the last 24 hours.  This is also the website we will use when we do our speed tests.

Free Online Typing Games - This website hosts 15 different typing games, 10 different speed tests, and an in-house typing tutor.

Power Typing - Included on this website is practice for the "QWERTY" keyboard layout as well as the "DVORAK" keyboard layout (we do NOT! use the Dvorak layout in my class).   Games can be found here as well as lessons on all the keys of the keyboard.

Typing Test - This website includes an explanation of what touch typing involves, a typing tutor (but you must pay for this feature), a typing test that helps you determine your typing speed, and games to help you practice your typing.

Typing Web tutor - This website has various activities on various levels for someone who is looking to practice their keying.  You can also register for free in order to get some additional perks.

Good Typing - Using this website allows you to take a speed test to see how fast you can type.

Classroom Resources:
These websites are used throughout the semester for a variety of reasons.  Most of them should be bookmarked so students don't have to frequently type in the web addresses.

Gmail - Google's version of email.  We use this frequently in class to email assignments.

Google Docs - We also use Google docs in class, but Google docs is not accessible until you have logged into your Google account.  In Computer Applications we use Google Docs to create a password account for the various websites that students use throughout the semester.  However, there are many other excellent reasons for students to use Google docs.  One of the other reasons is that teachers in our school district will be asking our students to use this to create assignments in.  This also works great as a collaborative backbone to a group project - students can work on the document whenever it is convenient for them rather than having to set up a specific time to meet with the other people in their group.

Classmarker - this website is used to take all of our vocab quizzes.  We also use this for several other assignments that we do during the semester.  The benefit is that you get to find out what you earned for a score immediately after completing the questionnaire.

Wikispaces - we use our wikispaces website for our vocabulary definitions.  Each student is required to work with a group of classmates to help define words during 3 (out of a possible 10) weeks in which there will be vocab quizzes (there are a total of 10 vocab lists).  During those 3 weeks the student will be responsible for defining 1-3 words (depending on how many classmates are in their group for a particular week) and posting it to the Wikispaces vocabulary webpage for their specific class.  To access your particular vocabulary webpage, you'll need to type in the following:

gmsamazon*.wikispaces.com (where the * = the class hour you have Computer Applications;  if you have Mr. Pardoe 4th hour you would type in gmsamazon4.wikispaces.com)

Internet Safety and Netiquette are two concepts that are interwoven into much of what we do throughout the semester.  We regularly talk about how to stay safe as we navigate the web, and we also incorporate rules of proper Internet usage as we email and communicate in (and out) of class.
